Although most teams started out slowly, the tennis, baseball and track squads rebounded with strong late-break surges. Baseball THE MAIZE AND BLUE nine began break-play on the wrong note, falling to the Iowa Hawk- eyes, 2-1 and 2-0. Both April 28 contests were marked by anemic plate performances of the base- ballers. The batsmen obtained a split from Eastern Michigan, taking the first contest by a 6-2 count and dropping the second go- round 4-3. But the batsmen (and the pitchers, too, for that matter) were at tip-top form last Sat- urday as the Wolverines accom- plished a minor miracle in East Lansing. Knocking the Spartans from atop their perch in Big Ten, the Wolverines blanked the Spartans twice, 7-0 and 2-0. "Ace" Adams, who picked up his third win in four decisions, and sophomore Chuck Rogers limited the Lansingers to a mere seven hits in fourteen innings of combined work, marking the first time ever that the Spartans had been held runless in an East Lansing twin-bill. The victory put the Wolverines in second place in the loop, even up in the all important lost column. Tennis THERE WAS bad news and bad news for the Michigan tennis team during its West Coast jaunt. Freddie De Jesus, the number one or two (take your pick) singles star, suffered a severe stomach pull and had to retire. De Jesus may be out for the entire Big Ten season al- though the duration of his conva- lescence has yet to be deter- mined. Now for the bad news: Michigan dropped its two West Coast games to tennis giants UCLA and USC by identical scores, 7-2. Against the Uclans, the first doubles' team of Victor Amaya and Kevin Sennich and -- MCK- IAGER sixth singles' Dick Ravreby were the only Wolverines who could break into the win column. The netters returned to their winning ways when they hit the Mid-West. They smothered the Golden Gophers of Minnesota by their usual Big Ten dual meet score, 9-0. Against the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Wolverines were almost as successful, coasting to a 7-2 win. Track THE THINCLADS burst forth in the Penn Relays, garnering championships in the mile re- lay and the sprint medley. The twin victories marked the first time that Wolverines had cap- tured two championships at the prestigious Penn Relay. Eric Chapman, Godfrey Mur- ray, Kim Rowe, and Greg Sy- phax represented Michigan in sprint medley and Al Cornwall replaced Murray in the mile event. The Maize and Blue inaug- urated their new Tartan track with a 78-62 victory over Illinois. Murray, Rowe and Syphax led the rout. Golf THE GOLF TEAM has yet to catch fire and could manage but a tenth place finish in the Nor- thern Invitational and a sixth in the Kepler. Softball ALTHOUGH THERE were a good many softball results, the most notable of the break was the trouncing the Edit Staff Flun- kies suffered at the hands of the semi-invincible Daily Libels. Playing in a torrential downpour on Ferry Field, the Sports Staff- ers carved out a 19-5 victory on 22 hits; Six Flunkie pitchers were dispatched to the showers as the Libels showed little mercy to their writing compatriots.
