Morton, 4-3, fell behind when the Giants scored an unearned run in the second inning. He struck out five and walked three. The Atlanta right-hander also got two of the nine hits off Sam McDowell, 1-2, during the six in- nings he pitched. After the Giants took a 1-0 lead on first baseman Joe Pepi- tone's error, the Braves 'scored two runs in their half for the winning margin. Dave Johnson tied the game with a home run, his seventh, and Morton delivered.a run-scor- ing double later in the inning. McAuliffe hit his first home run of the 'year into the upper deck in right field in the fourth in- ning. DH Gates Brown singled, moved to second on a fluke sin- gle by Duke Sims. Sims fisted one off Yankee starter George Medich towards shortstop Gene Micjhael. Michael, a rather adept fielder, seemed to have lost the ball in the bright Tiger Stadium lights and the ball fell harmlessly in for the safety. After a Norm Cash out, "Mac" delivered his blow, a towering shot and the kind the second sacker is not supposed to hit anymore. The Bengals got on the board again in the eighth as Sims, whose bat is quite hot since he has been inserted in the lineup, came scampering home on a Jim Northrup single. The bombing Yankee bats were silenced quite effectively by L- lich. DH extraordmiire Jim Hart, who battered the Bengals in the first game of the series Tuesday night, went 0 for four, streaking Thurman Munson had one safety. The victory was Lolich's sixth complete game. Of these, Hard- Luck Mick has been on the wrong end in four. Two have been 1-0 and the other two of his com- plete game losses have been by the score of 2-1. The loss for Medich, a pre- med student, was his second in five decisions and for the Yanks destroyed their hopes for a tan- talizing and uplifting three game sweep of the Detroit ball club. Although the place in the stand- ings mean little at this point in the crowded and unstable East- ern Division, the Tigers do have a grasp on first. Their 21-20 mark is one game better than the Yanks 20-21 record. AL Standings East W L Pet.
