SAN DIEGO ()-"Full in- quiries" were promised by the district attorney and two state agencies yesterday into the use of drugs by professional football players in San Diego. The California Board of Medi- cal Examiners, and the Califor- nia Board of Pharmacy took the action in the wake of charges made in a lawsuit by Houston, Ridge, a former lineman. A special consumer investiga- tor for the district attorney said the case has been "officially I Let us help you: PLAN AHEAD To Become a CPA THE BECKER CPA REVIEW COURSE Detroit 313 961-1400 Our Successful Students Represent 15-S opened for investigation." BEFORE HIS damage suit was settled recently for $260,000 Ridge claimed he was made vulnerable to injury by drugs which the San Diego Chargers ordered him to take. But claims in depositions that powerful drugs were given out wholesale without prescriptions were denied by Dr. E. "Paul Woodward, the team physician. "Ball players who have been with the club a long time know this was never done," Woodward said in an interview. AMONG. DEPOSITIONS taken in the lawsuit was one in which the team's former trainer, Jim Van Deusen, said a nonprescrip- tion policy was used in the case of some drugs. The sworn statement by Van Deusen said big supplies of pep pills were delivered to the Chargers by a San Diego phar- macist, using Woodward's pre- scription authority. In 1969 alone, the statement said 2,500 pep pills, 1;850 sedative-type drugs and 1,000 sleeping pills were allegedly given the players. Van Deusen said be some- times put the pep pills "in an envelope for the players." Wood- ward was quoted as saying he agreed with the system where- by the trainer issued the pills. THE RECORDS showing exact- ly what was done with all of those pills were "destroyed," said one of the depositions. Woodward said the public was being given "the wrong idea" by news reports of the Ridge case. Those pills, he said, included "any kind of medication-vita- mins, salt pills, everything." The Chargers tried "what we felt was the best way to keep control over the drug problem," he said. "We tried to discourage it. We never had amphetamines out where guys could get hand- fuls and all that." Alouettes sing Rodgers' song Johnny Rodgers, Heisman Trophy winner and Mr. Excitement of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, decided yesterday to play his pro ball for the Montreal Alouettes. Called "too small" to make it in the NFL, Rodgers apparently did not accept the San Diego Charger offer which would have made him the highest paid first round draftee. The Canadian team agreed to triple pay if Rodgers was cut or traded. Jimmy Jones, ex-USC quarterback, also inked a Montreal pact. Busted i Boston BOSTON-Doug Griffin, the Boston Red Sox's spunky little second baseman, suffered a fractured left hand when struck by a Billy Champion pitch yesterday.
