Yorty says Bradley is surrounded by
"radicals" and "easterners" and points
out that Bradley spent twice as much as
the incumbent in the primary campaign-
roughly $800,000 to $400,000.
"HE IS TRYING to create a new
image," says Yorty. "Four years ago he
acted like he was trying to disassociate
himself with the police department.
"This time he is trying to project a
new image of law and order and so forth.
On the surface he's done an about face
but underneath it all he's still the same
old Tom Bradley."
Few men could be so unalike.
YORTY IS A Nebraska-born transplant
with the Midwestern twang still in evi-
dence, a bouncy down-to-earth sort who
has gone from left to right wing including
a break with John Kennedy and served as
a state legislator and congressman.
Bradley was in the police department
for 21 years and has been on the City
Council for the past 10. He is a tall, soft
spoken and rather reserved man.
