Waste dumped in Huron River (continued from Page 3) "THE CITY'S treatment capa- city must be increased or the situation could become very cri- tical," Mammel said. Currently sewage is not being treated as completely as it might be. because of the large quantity which must be handled. "There just cannot be as good treatment when the system works at a near capacity level, that is why we're seeking expanded facilities," Mammel said. PRIOR TO JANUARY, anytime the sewer system was worked over capacity, raw waste was released. The overloads occurred rarely and then only for "brief periods," Mammel said. Since the first of the year a massive interceptor tank has been used to store sewage during peak flow times until. it can be treated later. Supposedly this method prevents completely un- I- rDon't change your summer If you're going to spend a lot of this coming summer around the water-sailing S and swimming-you'll want the protection of Tampax tampons. Girls have frequently wondered about swimming during those difficult days. Old-fashioned napkins make swimming impossible, but with Tampax tampons the message has always been: "Go ahead and swim." You're dependably protected internally. And you never have to worry about anything , showing under , swimsuits because internal protection is invisible protection. So don't change your summer plans just because your period might I SORRY, FELLA, BUT IF YOU DON' T HAV A COLEGE Going to college DEGREE, BUG GongtFcllg is more than i going to school. fj In Paris, it's I 1 a lot more. The city currently has a $10,- 000,000 expansion plan on the drawing board, but probably can- not finance construction without state or federal aid. KENNEY INDICATED the state government might withhold funds in an effort to force the city to become part of a con- troversial "super sewer." The super sewer plan is a mas- sive waste treatment system which would serve an area en- compassing Washtenaw, Oakland, and Wayne Counties. The city contends its funds could be bet- ter spent by improving the pres- ent system rather than helping to finance super sewer. Republican councilmen show clout By GORDON ATCHESON At last Monday night's City Council meeting, the newly elect- ed Republican majority exercised its political clout by revoking a city boycott of Honeywell pro- ducts and defeating several mea- sures introduced by Democratic and Human Rights Party council- members. The previous council had ap- proved a resolution boycotting Honeywell because the company produces anti-personnel weapons used in the Indo-China war. THE RESOLUTION was re- scinded by a 7-4 vote, with the Republican concilmembers cast- ing the affirmative votes. The Republicans also teamed up to defeat measures which would have established a com- mission to study pay for the mayor and councilmembers, re- constituted the Ann Arbor Tran- sit Authority (AATA), and con- demned "Watergate crimes." JERRY DeGRIECK (HRP- First Ward) spoke in favor of the HRP proposal. to set-up a commission to recomiend sal- ary levels for council saying, "pay for councilpeople is needed because, in general, those now serving on council are members of the. upper class elite." Mayor James Stephenson spoke against the ordinance. "We can- not establish the commission without a firm mandate from the people," he said. The measure was voted down 7-4, all Republi- cans voting no. A RESOLUTION condemning the Watergate affair, introduced by council members Carol Jones (D-Second Ward) and Norris Thomas (D-First Ward) fell by the same tally.
