BOBBY VALENTINE leaps
before he crashed.

ANN ARBOR CIVIC THEATRE
PRESENTS

Baseball notes
Bobby Valentine's "happiest season" ended tragically Thurs-
day as he crashed into the wall of the Anaheim Stadium while
chasing after a home run hit off the bat of Oakland's Dick
Green. Valentine, who was cruising along with a .302 averoge,
broke the fibula of his right leg. As he was carried off the
field, the valiant center fielder urged the team to "win the
pennant" . . . As predicted by some baseball experts the re-
turn of Leo the Lip to the helm at Houston brought on a slump.
Before Thursday's win the Astors had lost four in a row . . .
Nolan Ryan and Bill Singer have been up to their old fire-
balling tricks. Ryan has 82 K's and Singer 70 to rank one-two
in the American League. The National's leader is Steve Carlton
with 66 . . . Despite their oppressive slump, the Pittsburgh
Pirates continue to hit. Their team BA of .280 is the best in the
majors . . . Last year when the Orioles fell off at the plate,
everyone thought they couldn't be that bad. Well, according to
batting averages released yesterday, they are. Bobby Grich's
252 leads the club and Earl "Win you a Pennant" Williams
is topping out with a lusty .16. He does have 5 home runs
however. As a whole the team bats .223.
Cross body
KENT, Ohio - What with Bobby Riggs taking on Chris
Everett and Karen Constant challenging Jack Kelley to a scul-
ling jaunt in Philly, it's been .a great sporting week for the
sexes. But perhaps the oddest sexual sporting news came from
this Ohio college town. Dianne Kovach is the only female in
a Flass of 24 taking beginning hockey this quarter. Kovach is
the ex-president of the Steve Dunning Fan Club which may
explain everything.
Jordan raps
CINCINNATI -- Lee Roy Jordan, Dallas Cowboys' middle
linebacker, said drug usage in :the National Football League
is "a very minimal thing right now, but in the past it was
something some of the guys leaned on."
The 11-year NFL veteran said many players are busy speak-
ing to youth groups about the drug problem, but "they should
be concerned about our own guys."
Free Time
Greg Buss who tore ligaments in his knee against the basket-
ball Illini and is still limping around on crutches was given an
extra season of varsity eligibility at the Big Ten meetings. Buss'
petition was approved for both basketball and baseball. Buss,
needless to say, was elated, "I didn't expect basketball, too." The
Wolverines' John Pighee was granted an extra year of football
varsity play also.
On tab . ..
The Bengals fly into the Bar of America for another
fun and game series with the Milwaukee Brewers. Billy
Martin, who didn't believe the Brewers were for real, is
taking his goggles and helmet just in case . . . The Big
Ten championship meets in golf, tennis and track wind up
today . . . and The Wolverines push for the Big Ten title in
their final home series, a twin bill with Northwestern.
