(1940) 11 News 3:00 7 News 4:00 2 News The nationally televised Water- gate hearings spent more than five hours yesterday angering game show fans and those who find more drama in soap opera than in the thrill of the hunt for truth in the packed Senate Cau- cus Room in Washington. In daylong, coast-to-coast cov- erage by NBC-TV, CBS-TV and ABC-TV, there was a sense of a foundation for future questioning carefully being constructed by the Senate Select Committee. HOW MUCH of the hearings will be telecast live by the three major commercial networks is indefinite at this point, their spokesmen say. The video coverage continued yesterday, and the networks saya they will make judgments on fu- ture broadcasts on a day-to-day basiS. Although the committee's me- thodical laying of groundwork was obviousSto viewers, there was nonetheless a sense of high drama. THE MOMENTS of humor were not so much funny as they were a relief in the high-pressure at- tnosphere. Thoserclose to Washington's workings over the years perhaps found much material heard at the opening session familiar. Viewers more removed from the scene undoubtedly found event rudimentary facts about common The Summer Daily, summer edition of The Michigan 'Daily, edited and inanaged by stpdents at the University of Michigan. ASIDE from yesterday's par- ticular topic, television's poten- tial in covering Congressional ac- tivities - or even City Council meetings - live and at length was made clear once again. To the veteran televiewer, those who participated in the open- ing session of the Senate select committee seemed much more sophisticated in the presence of video cameras than many per- sons in televised hearings of long ago. From politics to sports to ev- eryday life, people appear to ac- cept the cameras more and more as part of the modern world. NO CASTING DIRECTOR could improve very much on the ap- pearance of those who took part in yesterday's session. Sen. Sam Ervin is head of the committee, and looks it. All the senators involved in the hear- ings look their part too, and viewers have a choice of atti- tudes with which to identify. The committee counsels sound like committee counsels. A n d those answering questions seem- ed self-assured despite the coast- to-coast coverage of the proceed- ings. AS FOR the proceedings them- selves, the low-key aproacn dominated the opening days. And television presented the picture, and the tone, better than the print media ever could.
