Page 16--Friday, August 10, 1979-The Michigan Daily Lueky Tigers win a thriller from Texas By MARK BOROWSKI Special tothe Daily DETROIT-The model leadoff batter is one who gets on base and starts the offense rolling for his baseball team. And Tiger manager Sparky Ander- son, a mentor of the fundamentals of the game, surely couldn't complain about the way his leadoff men perfor- med in Detroit's 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers last night at Tiger Stadium. All of Detroit's runs were scored by the leadoff man of the inning. The Texas team played the roll of the fun- damentalists as well, scoring both of their runs by getting their leadoff man aboard. TIGER ROOKIE pitcher Mike Chris picked up his second victory against no losses, with some excellent relief help from bullpen ace Aurelio Lopez. The Rangers starting pitcher Doc Medich meanwhile suffered his sixth defeat of the season for Texas. The Tiger starter got off to a shaky start in the first inning. He walked Ranger leadoff man Micky Rivers on four straight pitches, none of which were even close to thestrike zone. Hut it looked as if Chris would get out of the inning untouched when he struck out the red-hot Buddy Bell and got Al Oliver to ground out. Then Richie Zisk spoiled his efforts by lacing a sharp ground ball single through the right side of the infield. Rivers trotted home from third to put the Rangers ahead, 1-0. THE LEADOFF man was the villain again in the second inning. Chris served up a two-two fastball to Texas third Eric Soderholm and he lifted it deep in- to the upper deck in leftfield and gave the Rangers a 2-0 advantage. The Bengals battled back for one run in their half of the third.Center fielder Lynn Jones led off with a double deep in the corner in left field. He moved to third on a single by Lou Whitaker and scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Alan Trammell. Then Champ Summers led off the fourth inning with his 12th homer of the season. The towering blast hit the facing of the third deck in right field and tied the game at two apiece. THE TIGERS continued to peck away at Medich and tapped him for the go-ahead run in the fifth. Again the leadoff man was the pitcher's enemy as Trammell doubled off the left field scoreboard. Steve Kemp doubled to the opposite field to bring Trammell home from second. LOPEZ RELIEVED Chris in the six- th inning with the bases loaded and no outs. Mike Jorgenson then pinch hit for Bill Sample and he hit a blistering line shot that Whitaker snagged with an outstretched glove. He then rifled the ball to Trammell. to double up John Ellis trying to return to second. The Tigers travel to Kansas City to face the Royals in a twi-night doubleheader tonight. Dan Petry, 3-3, and Pat Underwood, 6-3, are scheduled to face Rich Gale, 9-8, and Dennis Leonard, 7-8 of the Royals. MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP: BOST( in two ru fly and D game wi Red Soxf 2.
