Player, North share Grand Slam honors ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Gary Player and Andy North were declared co-winners of the first PGA Grand Slam of Golf yesterday after both shot three- over-par 73s at the Oak Hill Country Club's East Course. Player, winner of the 1978 Masters, and North, the 1978 U.S. Open cham- pion, will become the first tohave their names etched on the $12,000 trophy. Jack Nicklaus, the 1978 British Open champion, and John Mahaffey, last year's PGA champion, both posted seven-over-par 77s. The event is designed to be an annual affair for the benefit of the PGA's National Junior Golf Foundation. The players, intent for the first few holes, later loosened up and exchanged light-hearted banter with the gallery as brief showers bathed the course but failed to interrupt play. Some 5,000 spectators attended. Player shot a one-over-par 36 going out, with eight pars and a bogey on No. 7. On the back nine he pulled even par with a birdie at the 12th hole, then made bogeys at the 13th, 14th and 16th hole to go three-over. North, who had gone out with a two- over-par 37, regained a stroke with a birdie at No. 12 and was two shots ahead of Player going to the 17th hole. But Player got back both shots when he knocked ina chip from 40 feet for a bir- die, while North was making a bogey 5. Both ended by taking bogey 5 on the 18th hole. The revised East Course, site of the 1956 and 1968 U.S. Opens, measured 6,974 yards.
