Page 12-Saturday, August 4, 1979--The Michigan Daily MUNSON MOURNED Kemp shines as Tigers lose 5-3 By TOM STEPHENS Special isaThe Daily DETROIT - The Kansas City Royals used four pitchers to limit the Detroit Tigers to four hits and got home runs from Darrell Porter and Hal McRae to hand the Bengals their third straight loss last night in the opener of a twi- night double header, 5-3. Royal starter Steve Busby, now 5-6, was credited with the win. Rookie lef- thander Steve Underwood received his second loss against six victories on the year. Busby allowed only two hits while striking out six in his six innings of work, but he issued seven walks to en- counter trouble almost every time he went to the mound. KANSAS CITY outfielders Al Cowens and McRae each scored runs in the six- th and seventh innings to provide the margin of victory. Tiger slugger Steve Kemp's two feudal home runs kept Detroit in the game until the final in- ning, when Kansas City reliever Al Harbosky came in to get pinch hitter John Wockenfuss to hit into a game- ending double play. McRae's seventh inning two out solo homer iced the Royal's first victory in Tiger Stadium this year in what until then, had been a see-saw scoring battle. * The Tigers were practically given their first run in the second inning when Busby walked the three batters. CHAMP SUMMERS, wearing a pad over the right leg he injured Wednesday in Texas, led off with a walk and stole second, his sixth steal of the season. Sommers moved to third when catcher Porter's throw bounced into center field. Rookie Alter Greene also received a free pass and worked a per- fect hit and run with Aruelio Rodriguez to score Sommers, as the veteran hot corner-man drilled a ground ball single through the hole vacated by Royal second baseman Frank White, who had moved to cover the bag ahead of Greene. The Royals rapidly used the same combination to get that run back in their half of the third. Willy Wilson received a lead-off walk and stole his 46th base of the year easily. McRae's single to right brought the fleet Wilson home well ahead of Sommers' throw. In their next two at-bats, each team used the long ball to exchange the lead once again. Kemp drilled Busby's first delivery in the bottom of the third into' the upper deck in right for his seven- teenth round-tripper of the year, a Tiger team leading total. ROYAL COWENS' lead-off double in the top of the fourth was followed im- mediately by Porter's twelfth home run of the year, a right field upper deck shot that landed just a little to the left of Kemp's blast. Porter earned his homer the hard way, dueling Underwood to a full count by fouling off five pitches, in- SPORTS OF THE DAILY Manery negotiates new contract BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Former Michigan hockey player Kris Manery has signed a new contract with the Minnesota North Stars, the National Hockey League team announced yesterday. Munson NEW YORK (AP) - A capacity Yankee Stadium crowd cheered the memory of Thurman Munson for nine minutes last night after Terence Car- dinal Cooke offered a prayer for the New York Yankees catcher who died in a plane crash a day earlier. While members of the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles stood at the top steps of their dugouts, Cardinal Cooke, arch- bishop of New York, prayed for Mun- son's family. After he had completed the prayer, Metropolitan Opera star Robert Merrill sang "America The Beautiful." THEN, AS Munson's portrait was flashed on the stadium scoreboard, the fans began their marathon salute for the deceased Yankees catcher. Through it all, eight Yankee starters in Friday night's game against the Orioles stood at their positions, motionless, heads bowed. Catcher Jerry Narron remained in the dugout with the rest of the team, leaving Mun- son's regular position behind home plate vacant during the thunderous ovation. Event after the fans stopped ap- plauding and cheering, left fielder Lou Piniella, perhaps Munson's closest friend on the team, remained motionless for another minute or two, apparently wrapped in his own thoughts of a departed teammate. THE YANKEES' clubhouse and dugout areas were placed off-limits to reporters last night in deference to the memory of Munson. The Yankees said they did not want their players bothered with questions in this time of grief. Yankee owner George Steinbrenner was in the clubhouse for about an hour during a team meeting. He was pale and drawn as he met reporters in an ad- joining corridor. "I don't know what you want me to say," he began. "The team had a meeting. A few of them spoke. It was a tribute to Thurman." THE YANKEES announced that Munson's No. 15 and his locker in the clubhouse both would be retired. His is the eighth Yankees uniform number retired, joining Babe Ruth's No. 3, Lou Gehrig's No. 4, Joe DiMaggio's No. 5, Mickey Mantle's No. 7, Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey's No. 8, Whitey Ford's No. 16 and Casey Stengel's No. 37. The club said Munson's locker would remain in the clubhouse with his No. 15 in place above it. In addition, the Yankees said a plaque would be placed in the center field section of the stadium where others honoring Ed Barrow, Jacob Ruppert, DiMaggio, Mantle, Stengel and Joe McCarthy already hang. Also in that area are monuments to Gehrig, Ruth and Miller Huggins. MUNSON WAS killed Thursday in the crash of his $1.4 million Cessna Citation jet near his home in Canton, Ohio. He was 32.
