day that Stan Albeck, an assistant coach of the Los Angeles p
Lakers, has been named coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers of
the National Basketball Association.
Cavaliers owner Nick Mileti, who has been looking for a
replacement for Bill Fitch as coach and general manager,
scheduled a news conference for later in the day. Fitch left
the Cavaliers in May to become coach of the Boston Celtics.-
Mileti also will name Ron Hrovat as executive vice
president and general manager and Jimmy Rodgers as

"It seems like every time a local
millage does not pass, they im-
mediately drop football," the dean of
the Big Ten's football coaches told his
largely non-sports oriented media
audience.
"I'm also concerned by the advent of
Title IX," he said. "Title IX could very
well come down heavy on college foot-
ball.
"If we don't produce an equality of
expenditures on both men's and
women's sports, the federal gover-
nment could come down hard on
universities. It could shut off federal
funds.
"There is talk of exempting revenue-
producing sports," Schembechler said.
"That is no good. Only 40 to 50 schools in
the country generate enough revenue to
pay for the rest of their athletic
program.
"My concerns are that we preserve
the game," he said. "It's important for
youngsters at any level to have the op-
portunity to play the game.
"We need football," he said.
"We've got so many easy things to do
now. We need something hard.
"I learned more playing football than
anything else I did. Anything ex-
tracurricular, I mean. I'm not saying
football is as important as my degree."
Schembechler also said the effects of
the 95-scholarship limit was finally
beginning to show in the Big Ten. Pur-
due and Ohio State should both be
favored for the title this year on the
basis of having veteran quarterbacks
returning.
Neither of the other two teams with a
serious shot at first place - Michigan
State and his own Michigan team - has
its No. 1 quarterback from last season
back.
