Page 12-Saturday, July 21, 1979-The Michigan Daily TIGER DH RETURNS TO NL Staub sold to Montreal From wire service reports DETROIT-The Detroit Tigers sold designated hitter Rusty Staub, an early season holdout, to the Montreal Expos yesterday. Staub, 35, a 16-year major league veteran and six-time All-Star, has been a major disappointment to the Tigers this year after sitting out the first mon- th in a contract extension dispute with mangement. Staub told UPI he had planned to ask to be traded before the end of the season, partly because of the treatment he has received since Sparky Anderson took over as manager in June. "He hasn't said one word to me," Staub complained. He said he even started growing a mustache-after An- derson had strongly suggested that other players removed theirs-as "my own silent protest. I hate the darn things." A club spokesman said Staub's con- tract, which runs to the end of the 1980 season, was turned over to Montreal "for a player to be named by Dec. 31 or cash in lieu thereof." The spokesman said he had no word of who would replace Staub as DH. Staub, a left-handed hitter, has been lif- ted from the lineup at times this season Baseballi AMERICAN LEAGUE G AB R H Pct. Staub, the American League's leading designated hitter in 1978, suf- fered through a June slump that brought his batting average down to .268. He had gotten off to such a good start after ending his holdout that some observers began to question the validity of spring training. He began his major league career in 1963 with the Houston Astros as an out- fielder, played three years in Montreal and another four with the New York Mets before he was traded to the Tigers in a 4-man deal in 1976. A career .280 hitter, Staub is one of a handful of players who have been selec- ted to the All-Star team from both leagues. He was picked five years in a row to the NL All-Stars and again as a Tiger in 1976. A noted gourmet cook, Staub threatened to quit baseball prior to this season in favor of the restaurant business unless General Manager Jim Campbell extended his contract for five years. Campbell refused and Staub, after missing all of spring training and the first month of the regular season, finally returned to the team. Campbell did agree to discuss a possible extension after the season got under way and, according to the team spokesman, was engaged in "preliminary discussions" with a representative for Staub. During the current campaign, "Trusty Rusty," as he was called by fans, had plenty of critics in the stadium who said he was not living up to expectations. In 234 trips to the plate this season, Staub had a batting average of .235 with 57 hits, nine home runs and 38 RBI. In addition, he had 12 doubles and one triple. "They've (Montreal) expressed a great deal of interest in me," Staub said when contacted last night. "I'm pleased to be part of something that wants me very much. "It's been a great three years at Detroit," Staub said. "This year was a crazy one, but with the things Sparky Anderson wante to do, it's understan- dable," he added. By The Associated Press NEW YORK - The New York Yankees optioned pitcher Jim Beattie to their Columbus farm club of the In- ternational League yesterday. The right-hander was 3-3 with a 4,93 ERA in 10 games, nine of them starts, with the Yankees this year. In 1978, Beattie was 6-9 during the regular season but was the winning pit- cher in the opening game of the American League playoffs against the Kansas City Royals and then pitched the first complete game of his major league career in the fifth game of the World Series. Beattie scattered nine hits in that game as the Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 12-2 at Yankee Stadium. * * * Aizado's back FORT COLLINS, Colo. - All-Pro dafancso andL vla Acdan hn dacidad to stay with the Denver Broncos instead of becoming a professional boxer, he said yesterday.
