In the week-long shake-up Carter sacked five of his 12 Cabinet members. After the announcement that the final ax had fallen among members of his Cabinet, Carter told reporters: "THERE IS absolutely no doubt in my mind that I and my administration will now be better able to serve this country and to resolve those problems and meet those challenges which I described to the American people in my address Sunday," he said. Looking grim, Carter made a brief appearance in the White House press room to bring down the curtain on the Cabinet house-cleaning that shocked and angered many members of Congress. CARTER SAID the transition in his Cabinet would be handled in an orderly way and said any vacancies will be filled without delay. He said he did not expect any further resignations in the shake-up that has strengthened the role of his closest White House aides. Carter spoke about an hour after the formal announcement that Schlesinger would be leaving the Energy Depar- tment. Earlier, Schlesinger revealed that his resignation had been accepted. Adams said he quit after a brief White House meeting with the president Friday morning.
