The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, July 11, 1979-Page 11 Knight incident in the courts SAN JUAN, Puerto Rica (AP) - American basketball coach Bobby Knight's courtside shoving match with a San Juan policeman heads for a court of law after Knight and the officer began legal proceedings against each other yesterday. Knight presented formal accusations yesterday against the policeman who arrested him Sunday. Knight's deposition, accusing policeman Jose De Silva of assault and battery among other things, was taken by the Puerto Rican Department of Justice. DE SILVA, acting as an individual and not a member of the police depar- tment, also accused Knight of assault and battery. Under the Puerto Rican legal system, the accusations are not formal charges but are the first step in a process toward charges. The sworn statements now go before a judge who will decide if there is probably cause for the charges. The case is to go before the judge Wed- nesday. If there is probable cause, the case will be moved up a step to a district judge who will decide on possible court action. The accusations were criminal in nature. PATRICK SULLIVAN, counsel for the United States Olympic Committee, said at a morning press conference that the accusations by Knight include violation of his civil rights, humiliation before his team and being incarcerated without charges. Knight, also at the press conference, said he was held in a cell for 10 to 12 minutes Sunday and was in the police station about a half hour before U.S. Olympic Committee President Robert J. Kane arrived and Knight was released. AP Photo Power pump. American Mike Stock grimaces as he performs yet another gold medal lift at the Pan American Games. Stock won a total of three golds. Sullivan said sworn statements will be made before the district attorney Tuesday afternoon. They will go to a judge for determination of probable cause for a court hearing. He said it probably will be 30 to 60 days before any hearings would be held. Baseball's Top TCen (Based on 200 at Bats through Mon.) AMERICAN LEAGUE G All R 1 Pct.
