Page 12-Tuesday, July>1O, 1979-The Michigan Daily MARSHALL GETS SAVE IN 5-3 WIN: Hard-hitting Twins subdue Tigers By TOM STEPHENS Special toThe Daily DETROIT-The Minnesota Twins took advantage of an early three-run lead, and got suberb relief pitching from veteran screwballer Mike Mar- shall, to hand the Detroit Tigers their third straight loss last night, 5-3, in front of 15,742 partisan Detroit fans at Tiger Stadium. For Detroit starter Steve Baker, it was the fifth loss on the season against a single win. Minnesota southpaw Jerry Koosman went seven innings and recorded his 11th win against six losses for the Twins. Minnesota grabbed an early lead on a two-run homer in the second by veteran rightfielder Willie Norwood. Baker was touched again in the fourth for a leadoff homer by designated hitter Glenn Adams. The Tigers struck back in their half of the fourth. Lou Whitaker led off with a single, and advanced to third when Steve Kemp stroked another line drive to center. Minnesota centerfielder Ken Landreaux bobbled the ball, and Whitaker reached home. Kemp roun- ded second and was thrown out sliding into third on a very close play that left the crowd howling in vain protest. The Tigers tied the game at three apiece in the fifth, when Jason Thom- pson singled and Rusty Staub followed him with a tremendous home run, his ninth of the season, into the yawning upper deck in rightfield. But the Twins took a 4-3 lead in the sixth when second baseman Rob Wilfong led off with a single, stole second, and then advanced to third on Adams' slow roller to first, and finally scored on Landreaux's line single. Twins' ace reliever Marshall relieved Koosman in the eighth and retired all six Tigers he faced in order. Marshall was threatened only by jason Thom- pson's long fly to center to lead off the ninth. Dave Tobik relieved Baker in the top of the ninth when the young righty gave up a leadoff double to Landreaux. The Twias however iced the cake against Tobik when Landreaux advan- ced to third on Mike Cubbage's sacrifice bunt, and scored easily on Ron Jackson's line single to right. The Tigers dropped their sixth decision of the year to Minnesota against only two wins despite matching Minnesota's total of nine hits for the contest. Detroit's Kip Young (2-1) goes again- st Geoff Zahn (7-2) tomorrow night as the Tigers try to break their three game losing skein.
