TITLE VI, WEBER DECISION DISCUSSED
Affirmative action conference draws 250

A federal official said yesterday at a
campus conference that the recent
Supreme Court decision permitting
voluntary affirmative action programs
in private firms also has ramifications
for institutions of higher learning.
"The Weber decision has clear im-
plications for affirmative action even at
universities," said Fran Farmer, direc-
tor of the Office of Inter-Agency Coor-
dination of the Equal Employment Op-
portunity commission. "It reaffirmed
the notion that affirmative action is a
viable, real, necessary concept under
certain circumstances," she added.
FARMER ADDRESSED more than
250 persons yesterday at an Affirmative'
Action Day conference in Rackham
Auditorium. Also discussed at the con-
ference was Title VI, a federal statute
prohibiting discrimination on the base
of race, color, or national origin in
educational programs or activities in
federally-assisted institutions. Covered
under the statute are areas such as
financial aid, admissions, course ac-
cess, and student policies.
"Few schools have lost money as a
result of Title VI," said Mary Pollock,
director of the state Office of Affir-
mative Action. "What we're into is
