Minnesota jumped in front against loser Jim Beattie, 3-3, in the first inning when Hosken Powell and Butch Wynegar opened with singles and Roy Smalley grounded into a double play. Jenkins allowed only one hit, an in- flied single by Cecil Cooper with two out in the first inning and retired 16 con- secutive batters until Jim Gantner tripled leading off the Brewer seventh. Orioles 3, Royals 1 BALTIMORE - A bases-loaded single by Gary Roenicke, following an intentional walk to Lee May, drove in two eighth-inning runs and gave the Baltimore Orioles a 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals Thursday night. Roenicke connected on a 3-2 pitch from Renie Martin, 0-3, who had relieved Steve Busby in the sixth and squelched a Baltimore threat. Sammy Stewart, 3-2, was the winning pitcher. * * * Red Sox 9, White Sox 2 BOSTON - Jim Rice hit his 10th and 11th home runs of the season last night to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 9-2 vic- tory over the Chicago White Sox. Rice, the American League 1978 home run champion and Most Valuable Player, ignited a three-run fourth in- ning with his first homer, a tremendous drive off Chicago southpaw Ken Kravec over the screen beyond the high wall in left center. Then, leading off the seventh, Rice V unloaded against reliever Rich Hinton, lining a shot into the Boston bullpen in right center. Rookie Chuck Rainey allowed eight hits in boosting his record to 4-3. He struck out five and walked four. Eric Soderholm doubled in one run and scored Chicago's second run on Ralph Garr's single. Dwight Evans led Boston's 17-hit at- tack with four consecutive singles. Kravec, 6-4, who had won six games in a row, allowed 10 hits and five runs in six innings. Cubs 4, Padres 3 CHICAGO - Mike Vail's pinch-hit sacrifice fly scored pinch-runner Sam Mejias with the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. After Barry Foote hit his second double of the game to open the inning, Mejias was sacrificed to third by pinch- batter Steve Dillard before Vail flied deep to center to score Mejias. Lynn McGlothen, 6-6, was the winner for the Cubs and Bruce Sutter, who pit- ched the ninth, picked up his 12th save. Bob Shirley, 2-6, was the loser. Ken Holtzman started for the Cubs but was lifted for a pinch batter, Larry Blittner, in the fourth when the Cubs needed a hit to tie the game under threatening skies. Gaylord Perry started for the Padres but gave way to Shirley after a rain delay.
