Greeks" scattered around the dance
floor were the ones to watch when the
steps became confusing.
The group circling the floor grew
rapidly and many dancers improvised
steps to keep up with music of the
Greek Bouzouki Band.
TRADITIONAL Greek dances will be
performed nightly by eight junior high
and high school students from the Saint
Nicholas School dressed in gold em-
broidered velvet vests with red caps -
copies of old Greek costumes - the
dancers cross-step around the stage
with snapping fingers raised above
their heads.
"Ya'ssoo," the Greek word for
"hello" or "welcome," is the theme of
the festival, and everyone last night
made themselves at home and sampled
the Greek foods.
The "non-Greeks" at the festival are
invited with a knowing Greek grin to
try ouzo, the powerful anise-flavored
liqueur made from raisins. "It will put
hair on your chest," warned one
parishioner.
ONE OF THE most popular features
of the festival is a long table covered
with luscious-looking sweet "pasta".
Senate subcon
draft registrar
WASHINGTON (AP) - A bill that
would renew military draft registration
for all men aged 18 through 26 was ap-
proved yesterday by a Senate subcom-
mittee. The issue might reach the
Senate floor for debate next week.
The measure, passed on a 4-3 vote in,a
closed meeting of the Senate Armed
Services manpower subcommittee, was
the first action in the Senate this year
on the politically controversial subject
of the draft, which was abandoned in
early 1973 at the end of U.S. in-
volvement in the Vietnam War.
A draft registration bill already has
been approved by the House Armed
Services Committee and awaits action
by the House.
THE SENATE panel's version would
reinstitute registration on Jan. 2, 1980
- a year earlier than provided in the
House bill.
But the Senate version would cover a
greater portion of the population by
requiring all men between the ages of
18 and 26 to sign up. The House panel's
bill only would affect men who turn 18

fund-raiser for St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
Festival organizers said they hope
this year's "bigger and better"
celebration will be even more suc-
cessful than last year's which was at-
tended by 27,000 people who ate more
than 36,000 pieces of pastry.

tion bill
after Jan. 1, 1981.
Both bills, by excluding women,
would invite legal challenges from
critics who say a male-only program is
discriminatory.
THE HOUSE had been expected to
act first on registration legislation but
it appears the Senate may consider it as
part of a $40 billion military weapons
bill that is scheduled for debate Mon-
day.
The Senate bill would revive
registration under provisions of the
Military Selective Service Act, which
also would require young men to be
classified according to their eligibility
for service.
However, the bill would suspend
classification until Jan. 1, 1981, unless
the president deemed it was necessary
and in the national interest.
The subcommittee said the parent
Armed Services Committee is expected
to consider the bill "early next week,"
probably Monday.
