Khomeini guards confront Arab rebels in skirmish KHORAMSHAHR, Iran (AP)-Revolutionary guardsmen and autonomy minded Arab militants divided this port city into opposing ar- med camps yesterday after two days of fighting that left at least 25 persons dead and 120 wounded here and in the surrounding Persian Gulf region. The government forces cordoned off Khoramshahr to isolate the rebel fac- tion. The bloody confrontations subsided by nightfall yesterday in a de facto truce. The revolutionary guardsmen, loyal to the central government con- trolled by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, included local armed men and others dispatched from Tehran and other cities. THE GUARDSMEN HELD the cen- ter of this city of 100,000 in western Khuzestan province, heart of Iran's oil region, and set up roadblocks at main approaches to the city. They stopped and searched vehicles and passengers, telling reporters they believed Arab reinforcements were trying to reach the city from thick palm groves on the outskirts. The rebels, members of the Arab minority in Iran, held positions in Khoramshahr on the west bank of the Karun River and in the northern section of the city. The Arabs seized several government building and clashed with the gover- nment forces in the port area Wed- nesday, but the Khomeini troops repulsed the Arab attempt to take con- trol of the entire city. POLICE POSTS IN Khoramshahr continued to come under Arab attack yesterday but all the attacks were beaten off, news reports said. The Iranian government has ordered a heavy guard around the nearby Abadan oil refinery, a crucial point in Iran's economy. ficial Paris news agency said residents of Abadan and Khoramshahr -were "asked to report counter- revolutionaries" to authorities to enable officials "to annul imperialistic plots." Iranian government spokesman Ab- bas Amir-Entezam said that "counter- revolutionaries and enemies of Iran" were behind the Khoramshahr fighting. Foreign minister Ibrahimm Yazdi, meanwhile, said Iran would break relations with the United States if it "continues to intervene in our internal affairs." In an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Anbaa, Yazdi said, "We are not prepared to allow America or any other power to influen- ce our policies." HE DID NOT mention the United States in connection with the fighting in southern Iran. The Iranian revolutionaries have bridled under U.S. criticism of their Islamic judicial system, which has sent more than 200 officials or supporters of the ole im- perial regime before firing squads. State radio, reconstructing the Khoramshahr fighting, said shooting began when eight unidentified men crossed into Iran-apparently from the bordering nations of Kuwait or Iraq-and engaged revolutionary guards in gunfire. Iran and Iraq both have increased their border forces since the fighting broke out, according to Iranian of- ficials. -JOWT7 GIGANTIC SHOE SALE 4 days only-ends Sat.
