The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, May 30, 1979-Page 11 Men and women win track honors By GEOFF LARCOM Michigan track coach Jack Har- vey was a double winner last weekend. Harvey's team grabbed first place in the Central Collegiate Championships, while the Wolverine mentor was honored as coach of the meet in the two-day competition. Michigan captured only two even- ts at the meet held in South Bend, but placed consistently high in the other events to take the team title. Mike Lattany,*who set a Big Ten record in the high jump of 7-31/2 in winning the conference title for a second straight year two weeks ago, paced the Wolverines with a first in his specialty, while Michigan's 400- meter relay also topped the 21 team field: The defending. champion Wolverines garnered 96 points in the wind-hampered competition, while Eastern Michigan finished second with 88. Toledo was third with 80 points and Western Michigan finished fourth. The men weren't the only ones earning themselves honors last weekend. Debbie Williams, Michigan's record-setting javelin chucker, culminated a fine rookie campaign for Red Simmons' track squad last weekend with a ninth place in the AIAW National Cham- pionships in East Lansing. WIlliams fired the spear 157 feet, eight inches, setting a new Michigan record and upping her personal best in the event in the process. The freshwoman field specialist's previous high mark was a 154-11, set earlier this season. Accompanying Williams to the AIAWs were discus thrower Penny Neer and sprinter CAthy Sharpe, each having qualified for the Nationals in the regional com- petition held at Terre Haute, Ind., May 11-12. Both finished their seasons in the qualifying rounds, with Neer throwing the discus 144 feet and Sharpe running a 12.4 in the 100 meter event against a strong wind. MICHIGAN'S DEBBIE Williams is shown here putting the shot, but her real speciality is the javelin in which she not only set a Big Ten record (154 -11"), and a Midwest AIAW record (153-4 ), but also placed ninth in the Nationals with a throw of 157 -8 , a personal best for the freshwoman from Euclid, Ohio. ETTERBEEK NAMED TO ALL-AMERICAN SQUAD Michigan netter shines in NCAA's By MARK BOROWSKI Quarter-finals have been a jinx for senior tennis captain Jeff Etterbeek. After being upset in the quarter-finals two weeks ago in the Big Ten cham- pionships by OSU's Ernie Fernandez, Etterbeek came roaring back in the NCAA singles championship before being edged by Warren Farrow of Southern Illinois Edwardville, again in a quarter-final match. Etterbeek was one of three Michigan netters who qualified for the NCAA singles competition held last week in Tigers Clip Jays TORONTO (AP)-Lance Parrish snapped an 8-8 tie with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning following a two-out intentional walk to Jason Thompson to give the Detroit Tigersa 9-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays last night. Lou Whitaker opened the eighth with a single off Tom Buskey, 1-1, and was sacrificed to second. After Rusty Staub flied out, Thompson was purposely pased, but Parrish spoiled the strategy with his game-winning hit. The Tigers were ahead by three runs in both the fifth and seventh innings only to have the Blue Jays come back to tie the score in their half of the same in- nings. Each team had 13 hitsi. Athens, Georgia. The other two players were *Matt Horwitch and Michael Leach, both of whom lost very close fir- at round matchea. The Wolverines' captain opened the tournament withan easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Duke's Kelley Porgis. Steve Denken, a quarter-finalist in last year's NCAA tourney, was Etterbeek's next victim and as he was downed 6-4, 6-4. He went on to defeat Pepperdine's Eddie Edwards 6-0, 7-6. Edwards was a semi-finalist in last year's NCAA tour- nament. Farrow then ended Etter- beek's fine career at Michigan by a 6-2, 6-2 score. "This is the first time in the last four years we were able to send someone to the NCAA quarter-finals," said coach Brian Eisner. "Jeff had an excellent tournament this year," he added. Et- terbeek was named to the All-American team and leaves the Wolverines with two Big Ten singles titles and one Big Ten doubles title. In the doubles competition Etterbeek teamed with Horwitch to eliminate duos from San Diego State and Southern Illinois Carbondale. The Michigan team then lost to the eventual NCAA doubles champions, Erick Isker- sky and Ben McKown from Trinity 6-0, 7-6. The only other senior leaving Coach Eisner's squad will be the Big Ten's number five singles champion Peter Osler. SCORES- National League American League Montreal9.
