The Michigan Daily-Thursday, May 17, 1979-Page 15 Bryant, agner stop Tartars, 5-0, 5-2 DETROIT-It was sweet revenge yesterday for the Michigan baseball team, but there's little time for the Blue nine to dwell on their 5-0, 5-2 twinbill pasting of Wayne State at the Tartans' home field. Just like last year, the Wolverine baseballers will be going into their regular season-ending home and home series against Michigan State with the Big Ten title on the line. UNLIKE LAST year, however, the high-flying Wolverines did not drop two ' games to the underdog Tartans as a prelude to the crucial Spartan series. Instead, Blue moundsmen Mike Bryant and Steve Wagner each turned in solid efforts on the hill to up the Wolverines " season slate to 21-13, while dropping Wayne State to 17-20. Bryant fired a sparkling one-hitter in the opener, with only a ground single by Tartan shortstop Doug Fowler marring his bid for the no-hig gem. Bryant struck out three while issuing six free passes in picking up the win. Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third, with a walk to Dan Cooperrider and singles by Rick Leach and George Foussianes forcing in a run. THE WOLVERINES then added four in the fifth on a pair of walks, a sacrifice fly and basehits by Cooperrider and catcher Jim Capoferi, wfollowed by junior Pat Balaze's two run triple. esterday, well below his playoff average of In the nightcap, it was Wagner who ed the San Antonio Spurs, 108-100, forcing went the route for the Wolverines, tur- over, Md., in the Eastern Conference finals. ning in an unusual four-hitter. SIGNS AS FREE AGENT Wagner's win, his first college victory, was unusual in that the Pioneer High graduate struck out none while walking only one batter. Both Wayne State runs were unearned, with a miscue by Wagner resulting in one Tartar score. Michigan opened the scoring in the first, pushing across two runs. Center- fielder Rick Leach banged a double following a hit batsmen, both runners racing home on Capoferi's two-run single. AFTER ADDING another run in the fourth, Michigan closed out its scoring for the day two innings later. Balaze again provided the fireworks, driving home a run with a double, after an error, another hit batsmen and a run scoring single by reserve catcher John Young put Blue ducks on the pond. lIce Ma George Gervin was held to 20 points y :11, as the Washington Bullets upend a seventh game Friday night in Landc Johnson i By DAN PERRIN Seven Michigan football players were chosen in the NFL draft earlier this month, but tight end Gene Johnson was not one of them. That situation was remedied yesterday with the announ- cement that the 6-3, 231 pounder has signed as a free agent with the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Johnson actualy inked the two year agreement the day after the completion of the draft. The Steelers contacted the Flint Southwestern graduate during the draft and then flew him to Pittsburgh where he initialed the contract, making him the eighth Wolverine to go pro this year. "My first intentions were that I felt I wasn't going to play," said Johnson. "But the opportunity is there right now for a young tight end." Randy Grossman and Bennie Cun- ningham currently rate as the top two ends on the Pittsburgh squad, leaving little room for Johnson to move in. Yet, the man who hauled in 30 passes at Michigan refused to be discouraged. "I feel pretty good," said Johnson. "That's the way it should be," said Benedict. "You can't count on somebody else losing to help you." Benedict plans on starting his ace lef- thander Steve Howe in the 3 p.m. series opener Saturday in East Lansing, with Howe going after his 16th league win against no losses. Fidrych, 0-2, was making his third appearance since being sidelined for more than a year with a sore arm. He was tagged for six runs and six hits in 31/3 innings, including both of Nettles' homers and a two-run shot by Chris Chambliss. GUIDRY, MAKING his first start since May 2 after a couple of relief stin- ts in an effort to shore up the Yankee bullpen, was pitching for the first time in eight days. He weakened after four innings, allowing two hits in the fifth in- ning when the Tigers left the bases loaded and two more hits in the sixth. Then he settled down until the ninth, when Steve Kemp hit a two-run homer for the Tigers. But Guidrry finshed aipto record his 41st victory in 47 decisions since Aug. 10, 1977, including post- season play. He is 4-2 this season. Nettles, who has driven home 15 runs in his last five games, slammed a two- run homer into the right center field bleachers in the first inning.
