Page 22-Friday, April 20, 1979-The Michigan Daily Todd tabbed captain of next year's icers By BILLY SAHN Michigan hockey player Doug Todd will have a hard act to follow next year, both on and off the ice. Todd; a native of Stouffville, Ontario, was recently elected captain of the 1979- 80 Wolverine hockey team. He takes over the reigns of leadership from Mark Miller, who is currently playing for the Binghamton Broom Dusters, a farm team of the Edmonton Oilers of the WHA. TODD SCORED 12 goals this past season and finished with 24 points. Elected by his teammates, Todd is, looking forward to next year. "Miller was always hustling," remarked Todd. "I'm proud of the honor, and going to do my best." Along with announcing Todd's new position on the team, coach Dan Farrell also announced the appointment of Dan Lerg and Tim Manning as alternate captains for next season. AS OF NOW, both Lerg's and Man- ning's playing status is questionable for next season because they are can- didates for the U.S. Olympic ice hockey team. They will be in action this sum- mer at the National Sports Festival in Colorado playing for the Great Lakes entry. Senior-to-be Lerg, despite suffering a knee injury in October which sidelined him for 13 games, managed toigrab 31 points in just 23 games, placing fourth among Wolverine icers. Manning, who will be a junior next season, corralled 34 points this past season for the icers as a defenseman to tie for second among Michigan scorers. MICHIGAN'S MARY HIBBARD slides safely into third to tally another stolen base for the fleet-footed softballers in yesterday's doubleheader with Bowling Green. The Wolverines took both ends of the twinbill, 7-0 and 6-1. Hard hurling keys Blue twinbil sweep, By LEE KATTERMAN In spite of clear skies, the Bowling Green softball team saw nothing but smoke during their doubleheader with Michigan yesterday. Wolverine pitching ace Theresa Gardocki hurled a one-hit shutout, her sixth win in as many starts, to win the opener, 7-0. In the second game, teammate Julie Zyjewski, pitching every bit as fast as "Smoke" Gardocki, turned in a two-hitter, winning handily, 6-1. The Michigan batters collected seven hits off noticeably slower Falcon pitching to capture the opener. Falcon starting pitcher Lisa Shelly gave up three hits and seven walks in the first two innings and the Wolverines accep- ted her generosity, scoring five runs en route to their second victory. ' Shelly, the leadoff batter in the first game, blistered a Gardocki fastball down the trird base line for a single. But that was the only hit Gardocki allowed the Falcons. In fact, Gardocki didn't allow another runner until the sixth inning, when a ground ball eluded the glove of third baseman Diane hatch for an error. Gardocki was happy with her performance, noting that a back problem had bothered her last week, but had cleared up. Freshperson Zyjewski used frequent strikeouts to hold the Falcon bat- ters in ch. ck. At least one batter fanned in each inning except the fifth. The only real threat Bowling Green offered was in the fourth inning, as the first batter worked Zyjewski for a walk and then stole second and third. The Wolverine hurler struck out the next Falcon, but gave up another walk to put runners on first and third with only one out. Zyjewski saved her bid for a shutout, however, by collecting her sixth and seventh strikeouts. In the fifth inning, Zyjewski again proved to be her own worst enemy. With one out, she picked up a hunt by Bowling Green's Karen Zook and threw it wide of first; Zook then advanced to second. A fielder's choice put Zook on third and in position to score on an unusual play. A balk was called on Zyjewski for illegal presentation of the ball before her windup, permitting Zook to score the only Falcon run of the afternoon. Bowling Green coach Kathy Bole was impressed with the caliber of pit- ching by Gardocki and Zyjewski. "We knew they had one real good pitcher tin Gardocki), -said Bole."We had hoped their second wouldn't be so fast. This is the best pitching we've faced this season." Michigan coach Gloria Soluk emphasized defense in her post-game comments. "We were weak defensively at Central (Michigan yesterday)," said Soluk. "Defense is so important to us. We didn't have any mental errors today." Books Bought . -f o3P Prices Paid. Co ce e( Pick-up) -WESTSIDE BOOKSHOP 113 W.
