Page 10-Wednesday, May 16, 1979-The Michigan Daily RECRUITING DRIVE FLOPS: Pivot un illed or Blue cagers By GEOFF LARCOM Situation wanted: basketball blue- chipper with size to play center on Big Ten team. If join, team will contend for Big Ten title along with national honors. Anybody out there listening? For Johnny Orr and the Michigan basketball team, it seems not. With the recruiting chores for this year's class pretty much through, it appears that Michigan will once again have to manufacture an effective offense, without the benefit of a big man in the middle. Granville Waiters from Columbus, who represented Orr's third and last chance to sign a quality big man out of high school, instead only added to Ohio State's recruiting bonanza for this season, signing with the Buckeyes last Wednesday. Waiters is now the third "big one that got away" for Michigan. Along with the seven-footer from Columbus East High School the Wolverines had set their sights on Tim Andree of Birmingham Brother Rice and 6-11 Joe Bresnahan from Oak Park, Illinois. But Orr had tradition working again- st him. Bresnahan had several brothers attending Creighton, while Andree had pretty much decided earlier in his career to continue to play in a Catholic school setting at Notre Dame. That left Waiters as Michigan's sole target, and the all-stater played the waiting game to the hilt in taking his campus visits late before choosing bet- ween Michigan, Nevada-Las Vegas and the Buckeyes. So the recruiting season which star- ted with such a bang has now quieted down considerably. On April 11th, the first day possible, Michigan signed Joe James, Ike Person and Leo Brown, and it now appears those three will com- prise the freshman basketball class of 1979-80. Of the three, Orr will probably rely most on the 6-5 James as a candidate to step right in and make a contribution. "James reminds me a lot of David Thompson (now playing for the Denver Nuggets in the NBA)," said Orr of the Ohio AA player of the year. "He's a great leaper and a great passer." James averaged 23.3 points per game in leading his team to a 23-1 record this past season, while hitting on 64 percent of his shots from the field and averaging seven assists per game. Brown and Person counter with their own list of credentials. The 6-8 Brown fired in 22.4 points per game in winning Ohio Class A player of the year honors for St. Peters, while Person, a 6-7 for- ward, led his Barrington H.S. squad to a 27-3 record in being named to a number of Illinois All-State teams.
