The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, May 15, 1979-Page 15 Netters cruise in Big Ten finals By MARK BOROWSKI Mother Nature and strong opposition failed to foil Michigan's dominance in men's tennis as the Wolverines cap- tured their 12th consecutive Big Ten title Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. The weather conditions changed drastically from day to day, but the Wolverines play did not as they steadily won four of six singles titles and one of three doubles titles. "Considering everything, we performed very well. There was a lot of tension because we were the favorites," said coach Brian Eisner. Sophomore Matt Horwitch retained his number two singles title by edging Mike Balken of Northwestern in the finals 7-6, 7-5. Freshman sensation Michael Leach netted the third singles championship by easily ousting In- dian's Mike Dickinson 6-2, 6-2. The other singles champions-for Michigan were Peter Osler and Jack Neinken. Outgoing senior Osler won his first Big Ten crown at the number five singles position, by manhandling Mark Klinglehotes from Wisconsin 6-2, 6-2. Neinken won his third Big Ten title by devastating Northwestern's Tom Benezra 6-2, 6-3. This year's tournament was much different than last year when Michigan and Wisconsin were the only teams vying for the championship. Singles winners lead Blue to NCAA's, "This year it wasn't a race between ourselves, any one team, but there were three to five teams behind that could move into second place and North- western had a good tournament and took over the number two position" explained Eisner. Leach and Jud Shaufler were the only doubles team who could muster enough strength to snag a doubles title. The Michigan team ably defeated Michigan State's Matt Sandler and Jeff Wickman 6-3,6-4. " The tournament was not all roses fora the Wolverines, however, as their num- ber one singles player, Jeff Etterbeek, was unable to retain his number one singles title. Etterbeek was upset by Ohio State's Ernie Fernandez 2-6, 7-5, 7- 5 in the semifinals. Fernandez went on to win the championship over Wiscon- sin's Ken Thomas 6-4, 6-3. Etterbeek and Horwitch, defending Big Ten doubles champions, were upset in the finals by the newly formed team of Ted Kauffmann and Mike Trautner from Minnesota 7-6, 6-4. The team is now preparing for the NCAA tournament which takes place in Athens, Georgia next week. The Wolverines have been the team selec- ted to represent the Midwest region for the team championship and will com- pete with 15 other teams for the national title. Etterbeek, Horwitch, and Leach will be three of the four players to represent this region in the NCAA singles championship tournament which takes place after the team championship is decided. Women netters turn tourney By GEOFF LARCOM If you were to ask Theo Sheperd to list the things that dissatisfied her about last weekend's SMAIAW women's ten- nis championships, the Wolverine men- tor would be at a loss to come up with anything. Sheperd's netters ran away with the team trophy, beating Central Michigan, 9-0, and Michigan State, 7-2, in East Lansing, and then returned home to capture all five individual regional qualifying berths. "Barb played a strong and relaxed match against Mascarin," said Sheperd. "She hit hard throughout and came to the net often, playing with a lot of abandon." ALONG WITH Fischley, regional singles qualifiers included Kathy Kar- zen, who successfully defended her number one singles title, Stodghill and Sue Weber. In the all-Michigan semifinals, Kar- zen defeated Weber, the Wolverines' number two player, while Stodghill downed Fischley to set up the Karzen- Stodghill matchup'for all the marbles, Karzen coming out on top in that one, 6- 3, 7-6. BUT KARZEN'S bid for a second weekend crown in the doubles tourney. was foiled by Stodghill and Kathy Krickstein, who turned back Karzen and Fischley ina three-set affair to lock up the fifth and final regional berth. 'Erery girl we took scored points. It 'was one of the best com- bined efforts of any team I've ever coached.' -Red Simmons Olympic hopeful Debbie Williams, whom Simmons describes as "the best woman athlete to enroll at Michigan," grabbed a first in the javelin with a toss of 153 feet, while Penny Neer placed fir- st in the discus to also qualify. Accompanying Neer and Williams to East Lansing will be Cathy Sharpe, who churned out a second in the 100-meter dash. Simmons was obviously pleased with the results of the meet, as his team was able to qualify competitors nationally in only its second year of existence.
