Hobson, who drove in tyo runs with a bases-loaded single in the first inning, had a single in the fourth, then capped the inning with a two-run double to cen- ter field. Jerry Remy also had a two- run double in the decisive fourth. Staked to a 10-0 lead, Boston's Bob Stanley cruised to his third victory in five decisions. Orioles 8, Mariners 3 BALTIMORE - The streaking Baltimore Orioles got home runs from Al Bumbry and John Lowenstein and a six-hit pitching job from Steve Stone to defeat the Seattle Mariners 8-3 last night. The victory was the 18th in the last 21 games for the Orioles and their fourth in a row over Seattle this season. The Mariners, who have never won in Baltimore, dropped their 11th straight game here. Rangers 3, Blue Jays 1 TORONTO - Bill Sample scored one run and drove in another to help lef- thander Jon Matlack gain his first vic- tory of the season as the Texas Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 last Matlack, 1-2, scattered six hits in only his third start of the season after being plagued by floating bone chips in his pitching elbow. Toronto starter Jim Clancy, 2-3, had only allowed five hits through 6% in- nings before straining his foot and having to leave the game. Reliever Jesse Jefferson finished the game for Toronto, giving up only two hits. After seventeen distinguished years as Michigan's head baseball coach, Moby Benedict resigned yesterday due to familyeand health considerations. Benedict leaves the Wolverines with a Michigan record of 368 baseball vic- tories and is the second winningest coach in Michigan athletic history. Watson, Nelson DALLAS (AP)-Defending champion Tom Watson battled miserable playing conditions and struggled to a two-over- par 72 yesterday to take the 36-hole lead in the $300,000 Byron Nelson Golf Classic. Darkness caught almost one-third of the field before play could be com- pleted. Watson, a two-time winner here and the current money-winnings leader on the tour, started his long day at 8 a.m. to complete Thursday's rain-hampered round. He lost two strokes to par over the swamped Preston Trail Golf Club, after his opening round six-under-par 64, to finish at four-under-par 136. PLAYERS WITH a chance to catch Watson after second round play resumes this morning include Larry leads in Classic Nelson. He holed a 162-yard four-iron shot for an eagle on the No. 2 hole and was seven under par for the tour- nament with two holes to play in the second round. Others also in contention when play was halted were Lanny Wadkins, who was five under par with two holes to play; George Burns, who was five un- der with three holes left, and Calvin Peete, four under with three holes to play. Heavy rains deluged the greens and fairways, and Jack Tuthill, tournament director for the Professional Golfers Association, twice signalled a halt to play for delays totaling two hours and45 minutes. Winds gusting to 17 mph made the 55-degree temperature feel much cooler. Major League Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE East W L Pct. New York 1 NBA Playoffs San Antonio118, Washington 102 Lance'1Parrish Mark .Fidiryc Former Blue hurler outduels Bird 5-1 By TOM STEPHENS Special tothe Daily DETROIT-It was a big night in Detroit for former Michigan hurler Lary Sorenson, now in the employ of the Milwaukee Brewers, as he held the Detroit Tigers to one run and five hits, in posting his fifth win of the year tn front of 42,563 fans at Tiger Stadium last night. - The unusual throng was there to see the 1979 home debut of Tiger hurler Mark Fidrych, who took the loss in his second appearance of the year. Sorenson made only one mistake all night, serving up a home run pitch to Tiger catcher Lance Parrish leading off the bottom of the fifth. The Brewers wasted little time in getting to Fidrych, as their second bat- ter, shortstop Robin Young, lined a shot to right center midway between Tim { Corcoran and Ron Leflore. It rolled to the wall for a standup double. First baseman Cecil Cooper followed that by bouncing a two strike pitch inches in- side the third base line for another double and his 28th rbi of the year. Milwaukee threatened again in the fourth inning, when former Tiger Ben Oglivie drew Fidrych's first walk of the evening and then advanced to third on centerfielder Gorman Thomas' two-out single. But Tiger shortstop Alan Trammell saved Fidrych by ranging far to his right on designated hit- ter Ray Fosse's sharply hit roller and making the long throw to nip Fosse by a half-step. Trammell and Lou Whitaker again saved Fidrych in the fifth inning with an inning-ending bases loaded double play on Sal Bando's slow hopper to short. The Brewers would be denied no longer however, as they rebounded from Parrish's game-tying home run to chase Fidrych in their half of the sixth, with a three run, three hit rally. Oglivie led off with a double to the right field corner, then the dangerous Thomas (3-3 with a homerun in the eighth) was intentionally walked toset up the double play. But Fosse doubled to score Oglivie and Tiger manager Les Moss called for righthander Jack Billingham from the bullpen. Billingham whiffed Buck Martinez, but Molitor connected for a double to drive in the third and fourth runs charged to Fidrych. The Tigers will again try for their first victory over Milwaukee of the 1979 campaign today, when Dave Rozema (1-2 )goes against Milwaukee's Bill Travers, also 1-2, at 2:15 at Tiger Stadium. Fidrych is now 0-1 this year, while Sorenson is 5-3. Esemeese=.
