Parrish knocked in two RBI's as he
doubled deep to center. Morales then
doubled down the left-field line scoring

four runs with the score 10-6.
The Tigers added one more insurance
run in the sixth when Lou Whitaker
singled Alan Trammell home.
However the umpires ruled Whitaker
out because of interference on the play,
and called Trammell back to second.
The run was nullified.

they were not able to score more than
two runs in any one inning. Probable
starters for today's game are Milt
Wilcox for the Tigers and Ross
Baungarten.

Tarkenton retires to
ABC broadeast slot
NEW YORK-Fran Tarkenton, the record-smashing quarterback for
the Minnesota Vikings, has quit pro football and signed a multi-year con-
tract with ABC Sports, Roone Arledge, president of ABC News and Sports,
announced yesterday.
TARKENTON, WHO frustrated offensive linemen for 18 seasons in the
National Football League, will confine his scrambling this season to the
broadcast booth between Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell on ABC's "Mon-
day Night Football." Tarkenton will do the six regular season games that
regular commentator Don Meredith doesn't do.
With Tarkenton's illustrious football career behind him, he will probably
be remembered as the man who:
-Set the standard for the scrambling, mobile quarterback;
-Held every major NFL career quarterback record ;
-Never won a Super Bowl despite three shots at it.
The former University of Georgia star began his pro career as the first-
year Vikings' third-round draft choice in 1961. He came off the bench in Min-
nesota's first regular-season game to throw four touchdown passes and lead
the Vikings to their first victory ever, a 37-13 decision over Chicago.
HE FINISHED WITH 18 TDs that season and his 56.1 completion percen-
tage was the best ever by a first-year man with more than 150 attempts. His
1,997 yards passing was the only time he would be under 2,000 in the next 15
years.
Meredith's contract with the network called for him to be in the booth for
14 games. But when the regular NFL season was expanded to 16 games and
ABC was given three Thursday night games and one Sunday night contest,
the network asked Meredith to increase his work load. Meredith and ABC
could not reach agreement, so ABC began negotiations with Tarkenton, who
led the Vikings to their sixth straight NFC Central Division title last season.
Besides the regular season games, the 39-year-old Tarkenton will be
commentator for three preseason games and the Pro Bowl in Honolulu for a
total of 10 games in the 1979-80 season. His first ABC appearance will be at
the Hall of Fame exhibition game in Canton, Ohio in July.

rallying for a 5-3 victory with four runs
in the fifth inning, two of them on Willie
Randolph's triple.
The game marked the return to the
starting rotation of Jim Beattie, 1-1,
who began the season in the minors
retiring all six batters he faced, and
striking out the final four.

ATLANTA-Eddie Solomon hurled
a three-hitter and Darrel Chaney
stroked a two-run double as the Atlanta
Braves snapped a five-game losing
streak with a rain-delayed 4-1 victory'
over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night.
Solomon, 2-1, yielded a first-inning
triple to leadoff batter Omar Moreno,
who scored on Tim Foli's sacrifice fly.
Moreno also singled in the sixth.
Dale Murphy led off for the Braves
with a single and moved to third on a
walk to Mike Lum and Barry Bonnell's
forceout. After a 29-minute rain delay,
Murphy scored on Glenn Hubbard's
single, then Bonnell and Hubbard came
home on Chaney's double to left.
