This Week in Sports

As the spring college sports season enters its final few weeks, Michigan's
teams are all beginning to point for, or are involved in league championship
competition this weekend. Here's a brief synopsis of what's up on the
Wolverine sports scene
Men's Tennis
In its quest for another Big Ten championship, along with a share of
the limelight in the NCAA tournament, the Blue netters finish their regular
season this weekend with home matches against Ohio State tomorrow and
Indiana on Monday. The OSU match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Cour-
ts, with the Monday tilt with the Hoosiers beginning at 11a.m. OSU has only
one loss in Big Ten play.
On their present swing through Texas, Brian Eisner's charges reboun-
ded from an April 28 wipeout at the hands of Trinity to register wins over
Colorado and Texas A&M, raising their season record to 17-2.
While the Buffaloes presented little threat in Michigan's 7-2 win last
week, the Aggies gave the Wolverines some Texas-size problems before
bowing 5-4.
Matt Horwitch, Mike Leach and Jack Neinken each registered singles
victories for Michigan, while Leach and Jud Shaufler and Neinken and Pete
Osler teamed up for doubles victories.
Baseball
The Blue nine's opportunity to bounce back from Tuesday's double-
header loss to Western Michigan had to be delayed for a day yesterday, as
rain forced the cancellation of Michigan's twinbill tilt against Indiana. The
Wolverines, currently 11-9 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten, search for brighter
skies today, along with a win at Ohio State.
Women's Softball
The women fence busters came back yesterday in the state tournament
at Grand Valley to stay alive in the loser's bracket, following Thursday
night's 4-1 loss to the host team.
Michigan knocked Oakland, whom they'd also handled with ease earlier
this year, out of the tournament with a 4-2 victory and were slated to play the
loser of the Western Mithigan-Ferris State game last night.
Michigan scored one run in the top of the first against Grand Valley, and
then could do no more as Julie Zyjewski went the route for the Wolverines, her
season record falling to 5-6. The loan bright spots were Diane Hatch, who
went 2-3 including her eighth triple of the year, and catcher Sheryl Tominac,
who had a double in going 2-3.
Michigan then had to beat Oakland to stay in the double elimination
competition, and they did, as Theresa Gardocki hurled her thirteenth win
without a loss this year. Outfielder Hatch was again the hitting star, turning
in a second 2-3 effort at the plate.
Men's Track
The Wolverines will make their first home appearance of the outdoor
season today, as they meet Indiana in their lone outdoor meet of the year.
Indiana is the odds-on favorite to cop top honors in the upcoming Big Ten
championships to be held in Ann Arbor two weeks from now.
The running events are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m., with the field
events getting under way an hour before.
Other Events
Fresh off a first place in the Go Blue Invitational, played on the friendly
home layout of the Michigan Golf Course, the Blue putters are in the midst of
the Spartan Invitational, played on MSU's challenging Forest Akers layout.
Meanwhile, Red Simmons' women's track squad is in Champaign bat-
tling for the Big Ten crown. The Wolverines are banking on strong perfor-
mances from field persons Penny Neer and Deb Williams, who paced
Michigan to a second place finish in a quadrangular meet at Purdue last
weekend.
Led by Kathy Karzen, whose 17-5 record at number one single.is tops on
the squad, Michigan's women's tennis team will wind up its regular season
with a match against Penn State tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Mark Fidrych will start against Minnesota this afternoon, making it the first time
in almost a year that Fidrych has taken the mound for Detroit. Fidrych was on
the disabled list since April 5 due to tendonitis in his pitching arm.

in five runs with two homers and Dave
Revering and Mario Guerrero drove in
two runs apiece last night as the
Oakland A's spoiled Jim Beattie's
return to the major leagues with an 11-5
victory over the New York Yankees.
Gross walloped a two-run shot in the
second inning off Beattie, 0-1, then hit a
three-run blast to cap a four-run ninth
for the A's. Revering had an RBI single
in the sixth and a sun-scoring double in
the seventh, when the A's scored twice
to break a 5-5 tie.
