The Miichigan Daily-Friday, May 4, 1979-Page 23 BOTH SERIES EVEN AT 2-2: Islanders, Bruins victors in OT By The Associated Press NEW YORK - Bob Nystrom's goal, a 10-foot chip shot into an empty net at 3:40 of overtime, gave the New York Islanders a 3-2 triumph over the New York Rangers last night and squared their National Hockey League playoff series at two victories apiece. Islander left winger Clark Gillies poked the puck into the Rangers' zone, where Nystrom stood all alone 40 feet from Rangers goalie John Davidson. Davidson rushed out of his cage in an effort to jar the puck free, but it flew in- to the air and Nystrom needed only to make sure his followup was accurate. The loss was only the third in 11 playoff games for the Rangers this spring, and all three have been in over- time. Thus, the semifinal series returns to Nassau Coliseum for Game Five in what has become a best-of-three com- petition. The goal was the second in overtime in Nystrom's career. The other over- time goal came on April 25, 1978, when his tally at 8:02 of overtime beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in the quarter- finals. His tally last night gave the Islanders six triumphs in their last seven overtime games. The Rangers tied the game 2-2 at 6:50 of the third period when rookie left wing Don Maloney sent a 10-footer into the Islanders' net off the leg of Islanders' defenseman Stefan Persson. Bruins even series BOSTON - Veteran center Jean Ra- telle's goal at 3:46 of overtime lifted the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens last night, tying their National Hockey League semifinal playoff series at two games each. Ratelle was sent in alone and scored on a short flip to Montreal goalie Ken Dryden's stick side, as the Bruins caught the Canadiens ina player switch to even the best-of-seven series. Rick Smith and Rick Middleton set up Ratelle for the winning goal. Smith passed ahead to Middletn, who drew Montreal's only defender over to the left wingboards, then fed Ratelle a per- fect pass.
