By AP and Reuter SAN FRANCISCO - Govern- ment - appointed psychiatrist Dr. Harry Kozol yesterday de- nied testimony by Patricia Hearst that he bullied and in- timidated her during a psychi- atric examination last week. Kozol contradicted claims by the- publishing heiress that his pointed questioning had left her hysterical and that he had sug- gested to her that she had a hand in her February, 1974, kidnaping by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). KOZOL was testifying on the second day of a special hear- ing requested by Hearst's at- torneys to seek an order by the court preventing any further examination of her by the psy- chiatrist. Hearst had testified that ev- erything Kozol asked her "was like an accusation." "He didn't care what I said or didn't say," she said. ONE of her attorneys, Al Johnson, characterized Kozol as an "FBI interrogator." 1"But the Boston psychiatrist told the court: "Why she re- acted the way she did had noth- ing to do with anything in my demeanor or anything in my voice."' Describing his demeanor as "gentle, tender and compas- sionate," Kozol testified that Hearst reached the edge of tears only near the end of their meeting, when he mentioned a slain terrorist companion for whom she proclaimed her love. AFTER about 2 hours of testimony, U. S. District CouA Judge Oliver Carter took under advisement the government's request that Hearst be directed to meet again with Kozol. He said be would decide the mat- ter no later than Friday. Asked by U, S. Atty. James Browning Jr. whether he ex- pressed disbelief in any of her answers, Kozol replied: PNev- er by word, never by expres- sion, never by tone of voice. Kozol, bespectacled and dress- ed in dark suit and tie, also denied Hearst's charges that he had touched her, saying they exchanged "not even a hand- shake." ASKED during cross-exami- nation to describe his rapport with Hearst, Kozol said be wanted her only to "try to ans- wer my questions. I'm not in- terested in being popular with her." He said he hoped Hearst, whom he described as "territt ly worn, drawn, tense and grim" during their meeting, would decide on her own to continue with the examination, adding that he had made no adverse judgments about her. Hearst,21,ztestified Wednes- day that Kozol had asked to see some leg scars from a ten- nis injury. "He picked up my leg and looked at it. When talking to me, he tapped at my hands," she said. "NO' matter what the out- come of the hearing, Dr. Kozol will not be permitted by the de- fense to examine Patricia Hearst," he said. He added that another gov- ernment psychiatrist, Dr. Joel Fort of San Francisco, already had examined her in compli- ance with court orders. The examinations by govern- ment and defense doctors are for use in possible expert testi- mony about Hearst's mental state at the time of the rob- bery. CHIEF defense attorney F. Lee Bailey told newsmen after the hearing that if Carter order. ed the defense to allow Kozol to wcestion Hearst further, he wonild read her the order and "let her decide." Kozol said his only refer- ence to the 1974 bank robbery was to ask Hearst: "Why did you do it?" In testimony Wednesday, Hearst swore Kozol asked her if she was "proud" of having robbed the bank. She also said he referred to her "getting her- self kidnaped. "I AM certain she never got herself kidnaned," Kozol said. "I neVer siiepsted she got her- self idnnned." Hearst's trial on bank rob- berv charges is scheduled to begin bore on Jan. 26. x FTT'O WELCOME -pages of use- ful information about buying an maintaining hifi components.
