To maintain their justly rich; heritage, as well as to balanceI the city budget, the city fathers decided many years ago to es- tablish an annual festival of commemoration and celebration.I The chosen symbol for this af- fair became the tulip and the pageant was thus named Tulip Timte. I have lived in Holland for all but two of my twenty-one years and have naturally experienced many Tulip Times. PER C1 Having grown disillusioned with materialism at the age of fifteen, I gave up the picture Com circuit for the less lucrative but more artistic endeavor of play-, ing the'French horn in the Jun- ior High School band. This turn- ed out to be a foolish move as, I soon found myself sweating it out with my musical cohorts in long and boring parades, play-L ing banal march music, and oc- LONG casionally catching a half-eaten taffy aple in the face from an irate music lover. In high school, I graduated in- to more clever ways of apprec- iating Tupil Time. My home is on a street that mysteriously transforms into part of 'Thilp Lane".During the celebration the City saw fIt to plant tulips on both sides of a five-mile stretch of pavement and it has ecome a great favorite for the multi- tudinous busloads of visitors who sometimes ask if we Hollanders wear wooden shoes all the time. The City considers these Tulip Lane tulips to be icons and im- posed a $500 fine for the de-' struction of each flower. Some of my friends after the encour- agement of a little fire water would cruise down Tulip L a n e and casually open their car door to mow down whole blocks of these tulips. Not to be outdone by such van- dals, the illustrious Holland po- lice force planted green, metal stakes with a large barb at the top within the rows of tu ips. Sure enough, the next year these drunken maniacs went to "get the tulips", their car doors were greeted by these obstacles to clean fun, and it is rumored by! those sport; who know that one yaung actually had his car door removed by one such weapon. Now in my later years, I have the distance with which to re- flect on my activities in Ttlip Time and have determined that! none of them was worth it.
