that as an historian, Kissinger
"couldtnot have made a state-
ment that the United States is

cal campaign Gov. Reagan per-
haps forgot that Athens sur-
vived Sparta by several cen-
turies."
Funseth also said Reagan's
portrayal of Helmut Sonnen-
feldt, a close Kissinger aide, as
saying that Eastern European
nations should give up their
sovereignty to the Soviet Union
was an "irresponsible allega-
tion" and "a total fabrication."
Sonnenfeldt "never said any-
thing like that, nor are these re-
marks attributed by Gov. Rea-
gan to Mr. Sonnenfeldt in any
way reflective of administration
policy toward Eastern Europe,"
Funseth said.
