All reservations must be made by Tuesday, April 6 CALL 663-3336 celebrates life By TOM BERGH MILES DAVIS has always acted as a magnet for gifted musicians, and the group on his latest LP Agharta (Columbia 33967) is no exception. Sonny Fortune on wood- winds, Michael Henderson on bass, Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas on guitar, Al Foster on drums, and Mtume on per- cussion display the same virtuosity as the earlier generation that included Chic Corea. The rhythm section is especially brilliant, setting up intricately arranged and shifting patterns which dominate the entire album. The music is best approached as a whole, that is greater than the sum of its parts. Like the movements of a sym- phony, the cuts complement and highlight each other. This is reflected in the fact that there are only four separate compositions on the entire double album. This album is a stage on the path broken by the famous Bitches Brew LP, the precursor of the entire electric rock- influenced jazz idiom. Agharta is more of a finished product, incorporating lessons learned in the interim. DAVIS, 49, had been in poor health before the release of this album, and there was some fear that his musical career might be ending. This album proves that he is not only alive and well, but still capable of assuming his generally acknowledged position as the most important living figure in jazz. AN INTERESTING feature of Agharta is that, despite the fact that it is a live album, no applause was recorded at the end of the cuts. It has always offended me to pay good money for an album only to get stuck with extended bursts of adulation. Davis' tasteful fade-outs are a demonstration not only of respect for his audience, but also of his self-assurance and creative maturity. At this, he is one of jazz's foremost architects-building layer upon layer of spirited rhythms that eventually serve as a founda- tion for the unique melodies and harmonies that emerge. His, compositions resound with cre- scendos and flourishes, and even a slower tune, like "Cannon Ball," becomes stronger as a result. Shorter's two contributions on Side 2, "Elegant People" and "Three Clowns," are less em- phatic and more refined exam-1 ples of the same affirmation of life. "E 1 e g a n t People," in particular, showcases Shorter's mellow saxaphone against the tinny keys of Zawinul's piano. The constrasting effect between these sounds produces a strik- ing result. ALPHONSO Johnson, who has recently been doing some work outside of the group, closes the LP with "Herandnu." It's a sur- prisingly assertive number from a member who's stayed pretty much out of the limelight. It begins at a point where another song would just begin to peak, and Johnson keeps the momen- tum going in a fitting summary of this uptempo record. With clearcut production from Zawinul and S h o r t e r, Black Market reaches the listener by affirming the belief that life is a pleasant experience. It's an uplifting message and, as the title suggests, you can get whatj you want from Weather Report -and at a bargain price, too. YOU NEVER LEAVE THIS GAME.
