FACE MISSOURI VALLEY

-Blue
By BILL STIEG
The NCAA pleasantly sur-
prised Michigan yesterday by
pairing the Wolverines with the
M i s s o u r i Valley Conference
champion in the first round of
the Midwest Regional next Sa-
turday, March 13.
Michigan will travel to Den-
ton, Texas to play Southern Il-
linois, Wichita State or West
Texas State, who are all in a,
tight battle for the MVC title.,
They are all considered weaker
teams than ninth-ranked Michi-j

most experts.
A win in Denton would place
the Big Ten runner-up Wol-
verines in the regional semi-
finals in Louisville, March 18.
They would face the winner of
the game between Notre Dame
and the Metro-Six Conference
champs, probably Louisville or
Cincinnati (see pairings, be-
low).
The MVC race is too close
to call. Going into last night's
games, So. Illinois and Wichita
St. were tied for first with 8-2
records. W. Texas St. was third
at 8-3.
S. Illinois played at W. Texas

Britt, team captain and
starter since late in his fresh-

long, successful stay at the
arena. Since his sophomore
year, Britt's teams have put
together an amazing 38-2 home
record.

sharp-shooting substitute guard,

The game itself? It should be
a good test of the Wolverines'
ability to apply themselves in a
mismatch-something they have-

(Ohio State,dMichigan State, at
Illinois and at Minnesota).
Northwestern is down in sev-

Hoosiers splash
Special To The Daily
CHAMPAIGN-The Indiana Hoosiers are apparently on
their way to capturing their 16th consecutive Big Ten
men's swimming championship. Although there are still
two days of competition left, the Hoosiers have a 237-125
lead over Michigan.
Following the Wolverines in points are: Michigan State
-114, Wisconsin--105, Ohio State-102, and Illinois-95.
Michigan coach Gus Stager, naturally disappointed in his
team's performance, was surprised with Michigan State.
He did mention, however, that this was State's strongest
day for events.
In the 500 yard freestyle, Wolverines Gordon Downie
and Alan McClatchey finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
They followed three Indiana swimmers. Other point getters
for Michigan were Joe Bauer finishing tenth and Norm
Semchyshen finishing 15th.
Tom Szuba, following three Indiana swimmers, finished
fourth in the 200 yard individual medley. Ric Pepper grab-
bed the 14th spot and Rob Bauman nailed' down 16th.
One other disappointment for Michigan came in the one
meter diving competition as Ohio State's Frank D'Amico
knocked off Michigan's Don Craine. Craine, who is ranked
number one in the nation on the one meter board, "was
just a little off like the rest of the team," according to
Stager.

and had already defeated Cen-
tral twice earlier in the season.
MELINDA Fertig led her team;

effort, followed by Lydia Sims

"Central had a really balanc-;
ed scoring attack," said Michi-'
gan coach Carmel Borders.
"They played a really fine
game. They used a press on us,
which hurt us in the beginning.'
"WE HAD A bad night," Bor-
ders continued. "We played hard
but our shooting percentage was'
low. We took some bad shots,
and forced our offense a little
too much. And I'd hate to think
how many turnovers we had."
On the bright side, "we did'
outrebound them," said Borders.
"Our rebounding strength was
very good."
The loss drops Michigan's sea-
son record to 12-5, while Central
is 9-10.
