Algeria calls for Saharan support ALGIERS (Reuter)-Algerian President Houari Boumedienne yesterday called on heads of state around the world to sup- port the people of Western Sahara. He also said Algeria could not stand by while the Saharan people were being massacred because they refused to submit to a new form of colonialism now that Spain was leaving the territory. T H E OFFICIAL Algerian News Agency APS earlier re- ported heavy fighting in the territory for the second succes- sive day. An Algerian army unit was attacked by Moroccan forces in western Sahara Tues- day. Boumedienne, current presi- dent of the non-aligned move- ment, addressed his message to Western and Socialist bloc countries as well as non-aligned states. He said that Algeria, which recognizes the Polisario front as the Sahara's legitimate rep- resentatives, could not hold back from its duty to support a neighboring people which is faced with genocide. HE SAID Morocco and Mauri- tania had broken openly with their previous commitments to respect the right of the Sahar- ans to decide their own future once Spain's colonial domina- tion was over. With the collusion of Spain, they had now begun a military invasion of the territory, he said. I "In so doing the Moroccan, Mauritanian and Spanish gov- ernments assume fully the heavy responsibility for the sit- uation thus created," he added. THE PRESIDENT accused Morocco's government of mak- ing "'bellicose statements which have no other aim than pre- paring conditions for the gen- eration of tension in the area. "Thus on January 27, 1976, m Moroccan armed forces delib- th erately attacked a convoy of h food and medical supplies trans- so ported by a unit of the Algerian p National Popular Army intend- st ed for the Saharan victims of: aggression," he said. w The Saharans were suffering M "summary executions, massa-ti cres, poisoning of wells-thee source of life in desert regions- sp the use of napalm bombs and a mass exodus of the civilian re population," Boumedienne said. fl Algerian Foreign Minister Ab- h delaziz Bouteflika sent similar a messages to foreign ministersI around the world. n th IN ALGIERS, the Secretary h of the Foreign Ministry called co in ambassadors from African - and Arab countries to transmit a message from the government about the latest developments in the Sahara. There was no mention of dip- lomatic representatives of Mo- rocco or Mauritania being present.
