But there will be some exciting Purdue, the Wolverines' op- matchups. In the 100-yard backstixke, Boilermakers' Mark Wintercorn and Buster Lorentsen wll be battling against Wolverines Rob- bie Helt and Norm Semchyshen. "Purdue will give us a good test in some events," comment- ed Coach Gus Stager. When asked about Northwest-' ern's swim team, Stager replied, "They are very weak." SO, IF MICHIGAN has as easy a time with Purlue on Friday night, as planned, then' one can only imagine xwiat Sa- turday's 3:00 p.m. meet against the Wildcats will be like. After all, Purdue beat Northwestern 93-28. Although it sounds like the local tankers may be wasting their time, Stager nas some definite plans on how to use these meets -to Michigan's full' advantage. Stager explained, "We have some young men on the team who haven't had a chance to swim in a meet yet. It wi1 be interesting to see how they do." He was referring t) such swimmers as Chip Ellis, Bill Mills and Kevin Cullen. All three of these freshmen will be seeing! action against Northwestern. THESE TWO meets will rlso be used, to some extent, by the Wolverines top swimmers to try and achieve qualifying times for the NCAA championships. Cur- rently, Gordon Downie is the only Michigan swimmer who has been clocked at a fast enough time to automatically qualify for the championships. The NCAA lists two times for Division I college teams. These times are the qualifying stan- dards for each event to be run in the championships. The first time listed, which is the faster of the two times, is the automatic qualifying time. That is, any swimmer who is clocked at this time for his specific events in a bona fide competition or certified time trial is automatically eligible for the championships. AP Photo FORMER PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES pitching star Robin Roberts has been elected to base- ball's Hall of Fame, it was announced yesterday. Bob Lemon, one-time hurling ace for Cleve- land, was also elected. THE SECOND time listed is! called the consideration time. Each event, in the champion- ships, has a limit of 40 par'ici- pants. When all the automatic qualifiers are used, then swim- mers who have clocked a con- sideration time will oe accepted until the event is filled. According to Stager, Michi- gan swimmers who will be gun- ning for automatics this week- end will be Tom Sz ba, Alan McClatchey, Ric Pepper arnd Gordon Downie (who will be shooting for another one).
