BOSTON () - Black and
white students fought in the cor-
ridors of South Boston High
School yesterday, the first day
after a U.S. District Court judge
had placed the racially troubled
school under federal jurisdic-
tion.
The school disturbance follow-
ed the early morning firebomb-
ing of the Boston headquarters
of the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored
People (NAACP) after antibus-
ing leaders warned that the
court decision could touch off
new violence.
POLICE SAID a witness told
them four white men drove up
to the NAACP office shortly
after midnight, and a firebomb
was thrown through the front
window.
Ltrin the day, South Bos-
ton High School teachers voted
to ask the judge to transfer
them to other schools unless he
acknowledged faculty efforts to
implement his desegregation or-
der. The teachers were backed
by their union.
On Tuesday, U.S. District
Court Judge Arthur Garrity
took over control of the school,
a focal point of antibusing sen-
timent, and named a receiver
to run it.
HE BARRED the Boston
School Committee from having
any say over what happens at
the school and ordered the ad-
ministrators transferred.
John Cunningham, South Bos-
ton faculty senate president,
said the court had "castigated
the faculty unjustly as the vil-
lian in this tragic situation."
Cunningham told a news con-
ference the teachers have no
intention of boycotting classes,
but he did not rule out future
boycotts.
GARRITY SAID black stu-
dents at the school were denied
their right to a peaceful, inte-
grated education.
The NAACP had filed suit re-
questing that South Boston High,
he closed, but Garrity took the
less harsh course. He named Jo-
seph McDonough, a career
school administrator and young-
er brother of the president of
the School Committee, as chief
administrator of the school.
Attendance was off about 20
per cent from Tuesday's level
at South Boston High, but both
black and white students enter-
ed the building wit'out inci-
dent. Leaflets urging white pu-
pils to boycott class were dis-
tributed, but largely ignored.
HOWEVER, soon after classes
began, fights erupted between
blacks and whites. A girl who
left the school shortly said
chairs were thrown and win-
dows broken.
"It's wild in there. They're
going crazy," she said.
Three black pupils, two girls
and a boy, were .arrested and
charged with disrupting a
assembly. Two black youths
were taken to Boston City Hos-
pital, and one required 20 stit-
ches to close a wound, school
authorities said.
Attendance at South Boston
High yesterday totaled 405, in-
cluding 144 blacks. Attendance
on Tuesday, before the court
decision, was 493, and 143 of
them were black. The expected
enrollment before school open-
ed was 1,280, including 432
blacks.
In 1910, says the National Au-
tomobile Club, there were
about 100 manufacturers of
electric cars in the United

States. But within 20 years
these cars were replaced by the
more convenient gasoline-pow-
ered autos.
