General endorses Stevens WASHINGTON (Reuter) - Federal Appeals Judge John Paul Stevens, President Ford's nominee for a vacancy on the Supreme Court, yesterday re- ceived strong endorsements from Attorney General Edward, Levi and the American Bar As- sociation. Levi told a Senate Judiciary Committee considering Stev- en's. confirmation that the 55- year-old Chicago jurist was "truly outstanding" when com- pared with other federal judges. HE CALLED Stevens' legal opinions in the appellate field "gems of perfection," and add- ed, "he is a craftsman of the highest order." The American Bar Associa- tion similarly gave Stevens its highest evaluation for "profes- sional competence, judicial temperament and integrity." Questions were raised, how- ever, concerning Judge Stev- ens' health, his attitudes to-, ward discrimination against women, and his role in a 1969 investigation of - corruption in the Illinois Supreme Court. THE JUDICIARY Committee was expected to report favor- ably on the nomination to the Senate, which has to approve it before Judge Stevens can be sworn in as a replacement for Justice William Douglas.
