Bears play
pregnant to
get luxury
quarters
DETROIT (IP)-Officials at the
Detroit Zoo suspect that eight
polar bears are faking preg-
nancy so they can live the life
of luxury during the winter in
the maternity ward.
"Telling if a polar bear is
pregnant verges on the mystic,"
said Bill Austin, a zoo curator,
who admits he has "great diffi-
culty" 'in determining which
bears are entitled to maternity
leve.
"THE PRIVATE rooms we
provide and the extras on the
menu make the maternity dens
pretty attractive at this time of
year," he said. "Some of us sus-
pect they just want to get away
from it all."
Zoo keeper Frank Wilson said
the suspected freeloaders in-
clude Big Bertha, Katie and As-
trid-all of whom had enjoyed
the maternity style of life be-
fore.
He feels the others - Snow
White, Claudette, Lou, Sonia and
Maybelle - are probably legiti-
mateoccupants of the zoo's ma-
ternity wing.
A SPOKESPERSON said the
zoo has 10 female and two male
bears. The prospective father in
all eight cases is Lynn, who was
Imated with all 10 last spring.
SZoo officials suspect the other
two may be pregnant but there
are only eight "maternity dens"
at the zoo.
Because the cubs are only a
pound at birth they don't have
mach imnact on the appearance
of the 700-pound adult female.
The zookeeper relies on his sixth
sense about the bears, behavior,
to decide which ones are preg-
nant.
Jerry McGee spent eight
years on tour and won his first
pro golf victory in the 1975 Pen-
sacola Open.
