On the night Liuzzo was killed,
Rowe said he informed his con-
trol agent that a Klansman had
just told him "this is the night
you've finally made the big
time." However, Rowe, who was
in the car carrying the Klans-
men who shot Liuzzo, said there
was no advance indication that
the Klansmen planned to com-
mit murder that night.
Immediately following t h e
shooting, Rowe provided the FBI
with the names of the three
Klansmen who were later con-
victed of civil.rights violations.
ROWE SAID that although "I
wasn't working Dr. King," he
"picked up hits and pieces" of
the bureau's campaign against
the civil rights leader from his
control agents.
"An agent made the statement
to me that there were pictures
taken of King at the A.G. Gas-
ton Motel in Birmingham and
several other places" showing
King "in compromising posi-
tions," Rowe said.
Another agent asked him "Do
you realize (then-FBI Director
J. Edgar) Hoover hates that
man with a purple passion?"
Rowe recalled.
