Tuesday,-November 11, 1975 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Three 500 YEARS OF COLONIAL RULE 7a Angola LUANDA, Angola (AP) -Portu- gal handed the mineral - rich colony of Angola its indepen- dence yesterday and made a hasty exit, leaving .the fate of the country tied to warfare among rival black liberation movements backed by East and West. The fighting threatens to engulf central Africa in a grow- ing bloodbath. There was no flag-lowering fanfare as planned to mark the end of 500 years of colonial rule, only a quick ceremony at the government palace, followed by gains freedom from Portugal the equally quick departure of high commissioner Adm. Leonel Cardoso, his staff and Portu- guese troops. POLICE OF the Soviet-backed Popular Movement for the Lib- eration of Angola (MPLA) im- mediately took control of the palace, the 16th century fort of Sao Miguel and other Portu- guese military installations. Secretary of State Henry Kis- singer told a Washington news conference that both Soviet and Cuban support of the MPLA was a "serious matter," and that the United States "will not stand still for any hegemonial aspirations" on the part of the Kremlin in Angola. At the fort of Sao Miguel, the departing Portuguese aban- doned 15 vehicles and left two more heavy troop carriers be- hind along the seafront as they boarded a frigate bound for Lisbon. Two helicopters circled over- head as warships waited in the harbor and another patrolled outside to ensure the safe depar- ture of the last Portuguese troops in Angola. "We just want to ensure there is no incident," explained one Portuguese army officer. "This is a correct retreat." AS IF things weren't bad enough, the capital's water supply was reduced to a trickle Monday, reportedly because one of the liberation groups scored a strategic mortar hit an a key pipeline. Repairs are ex- pected to take a week. Portugal's high commissioner announced the handover of pow- er to the "Angolan people" at noon in the chandeliered ball- room of the old colonial govern- ment palace. The transfer came 12 hours ahead of schedule. The three rival African move- ments, which have plunged the nation into a year-long civil war over who should control the mineral-rich territory, were not represented. Ms. Fromme, 27, a disciple, of cult leader Charles Manson, was ejected from the courtroom Friday and stripped of her right to represent herself when she made a scene because Manson was not allowed to appear at her trial.. U. S. DISTRICT Judge Thom- as MacBride brought Ms., Fromme back briefly from her cell before the trial opened this morning to ask her if she was willing to behave herself and be quiet. But the red-haired, freckle- faced defendant, hugging a red robe to her chest which she claims symbolizes the "blood of the sacrifice" made by the Man- son family for the world, said she would stay out if not allow- ed to speak for herself. 5 O'Clock Deadline 16 CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION DELEGATE POSITIONS Are Available for Fall SGC Elections TO DAY RM. 3909 MICHIGAN UNION 763-3241 THE DEFENDANT, who Virga, put on her defense for claims she pulled the pistol as a her. publicity stunt and did not in- "No, your honor, you can't tend to kill Mr. Ford, told the put it on for me," Ms. Fromme judge: "I want you to know said. that this is not a frivolous dis- ruption (her outburst on Fri- THE JUDGE asked: "You re- day).
