The next game is al-3 ways the most important, and1 right now, it's the Michigan1 game." Yes, the Purdue "Spoilermak- ers" come to town this week.1 Agase's squad is 2-3 in the Bigc Ten and 2-6 overall, and at1 first glance does not pose much7 of a threat to Michigan. But Purdue has been playing' its best ball of the season in theE last three games, including up- sets over Illinois and Michigan1 State.c "Purdue is on the upswing,"f said Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler, "and those victories over Illinois and Michigan State indicate to me that they are ready to play. "They really have improved," Schembechler continued. "Their, offenseruns the ball more, and with authority . . . They are awesome on the ground. I look at the films, and I cannot be-i lieve that team is 2-6."r Earlier this season, Purduel battled a highly - touted South-1 ern Cal team to a scoreless halftime deadlock before fallingi 19-6. The Boilermaker defense held Trojan tailback, Ricky BellI to 89 yards, his lowest total of the season.c At South Bend, Notre Damel held a slim 3-0 lead over Pur-' due as late as the third- quar-c ter. Purdue had the ball on thef Irish three-yard line before an interception thwarted the at- tack. But close just wasn't good enough as they fell, 17-0. ' Purdue mainly runs an op-t tion-type offense, with juniort quarterback Mark Mark Vitali, 6-4, 205, at the helm.t "Vitali has improved over last year," said Agase. "There was a point early in the sea- son when his confidence defi- nitely was shaken, up until the Illinois game, but things turn- ed around.
