The jump , indicated that inflation remains a serious problem. White House Press Secretarya Ron Nessen said the report demonstrates t h a t "inflation] certainlyis by no means some- thing that can be ignored" in1 shaping policy. NESSEN said that "there is some feeling of concern by the President's economic advisers. in their evaluation" of the wholesale price report. He said a number of technical and one- time factors helped boost the wholesale index, but that Ford's economic aides want to "see evidence over a somewhat long- er period of time" before reach- ing conclusions on the signifi- cance of the October figures.- Price tags on new model cars, lumber and textile products' were particularly significant in raising prices last month, but the increases were spread al- most across the board, the La- bor Department said. Farm prices also were up sharply but, still about half the rise in Sep.. tember. October's i n c r e a s e in the wholesale price index followed gains of six-tenths of a per cent in September and eight-tenths of a per cent in August and was the sharpest rise since October, 1974 when wholesale prices rose 2.9 per cent. WITH A new spurt at the wholesale level, consumers can expect a substantial rise in the cost of living in the months o MODERN FIRSTS o AMERICAN INDIANS o MUSIC - POETRY * ORIENTAL TRAVEL 113 W. Over the last three months, wholesale prices rose at an an- nual rate of 13.5 per cent, up from a 6 per cent rate in the May-July quarter. ; However, the rate was still N -- less than half the 29.6hper cent rate the three months ended ./4 .4 "- last October before the reces- sion slowed inflation. - WHOLESALE p r i c e s last month were 5.1 per cent higher than a year ago. The index -- moved up to 178.9, meaning it , -- cost $178.90 in October to buy { ' the same goods at wholesale.' which sold for $100 in the 1967 x b d base period:. Farm prices rose 2.2 per cent last month, a sharp rate but Y' still significantly less than thePa 4.3 per cent increase in Septem- ber. This put farm prices 5.2 per cent above a year ago. r The sharpest increases in.,4. *.-.',4 4.. agriculture were for live poul- try, leaf tobacco and fluid milk. Prices for fresh and dried vege- - tables dropped in October, while livestock and plant and animal fibers rose much less than in the previous month. Farm prices fluctuate erratic- ally from month to month. Thus, economists consider industrial prices a more reliable barom eter of basic inflationary trends. ,. . . ~ ~ ;~ In this category the news was not good. _ Fire watch ; --------------- Children watch Newark firemen try to extinguish a blaze in their apartment building. HA R RIN GT O N, mean- while, had filed counter-com- plaints against members of the Armed Services Committee who had voted to deny him access to classified information. Flynt told the Ethics Commit- tee that it was learned only Wednesday that the April 22 meeting of the investigation subcommittee was irregular. Ile said that no public no- tice of the meeting was issued, a quorum was not present, there was no vote to go into executivessession and only one committee member, Chairman Lucien N. Nedzi (D-Mich.) was present when Colby testified. "WE ARE required to find that the 'hearing' which was believed to have been held was a nullity," Flynt said. "In other words, no executive session occurred and the infor- mation divulged was not taken in an executive session of a committee of the House of Rep- resentatives," he said. Flynt said that until this in- formation came to light the committee proceedings on the complaint had been based on the understanding that the testi- mony involved had been given at an executive session.
