So let's bowl them over on Saturday. Go Blue!" THE CROWD bubbled with excitement. Between speakers there werel the familiar cheers - "Super- Great! Super-Great! Super-j Great! - and the prep band hung right in there with num- erous renditions of "Hail to the Victors" and other favorites. The cheerleaders, two female and eight male, were ecstatic IT'S A BANNER YEAR v FOR FLAGSI WASHINGTON (P - Thisj year is going to be a banner oneI for the flagmakers. Manufacturers are sewing up acres and acres of official red, white and blue and not just to- day's version of Old Glory, the' National Geographic Society re- ports. They're running all kinds off stars and stripes up the flag-, pole, two especially: the "Betsy' Ross" flag of 13 stripes - 7 red and 6 white and a circle of 13 stars; and the "Bennington" flag of 7 white and 6 red stripes and "76" on thefield of blue un- der an arch of 13 stars. Serious students of the flags also know about the ancestors of the Stars and Stripes: the "Don't Tread on Me" rattle- r snake flag, the "Appeal to Heaven" pine tree flag, the blue "Liberty or Fort Moultrie" flag and the Continental Colors, sometimes called the Grand Union flag. These flags led George Washington into battle, not the Stars and Stripes. Wash- ington crossed the Delaware un- der the Grand Union flag. This banner had 13 red and! white stripes but, instead of stars, it flourished the familiar British Union Jack in the upper left corner. from start to finish. Loken gave an appreciative and peppy introduction to two men without whom there would be no reason for the rally: Co-{ Captains Don Dufek and the sidelined Kurt Lewis, saddled+ with an arm injury. DUFEK told the crowd, "We're not going to the Cotton Bowl, We're not going to the Sugar Bowl, we're not going to the Orange Bowl - We're going, WEST. To the Rose Bowl!" The crowd became one solid wall of' sound in cheers and applause. Next on the docket was! Shemy Schembechler, Bo's six- year-old son. He didn't have much to say, but Loken elevat- ed on his shoulders him to the full view of the crowd, where he was greeted by applause. And then Shemy's Papa, Bo,, appeared. Newt poured acco- lade after accolade upon this truly remarkable man with a record Michigan has a right to guard jealously. BO DESCRIBED the football team's "coming to life" in the past two weeks, and made two; predictions about Saturday's game. First, he said MichiganI would win - and the crowdI cackled. Second, he said, "We will not have more than one turnover in the game!" The au- dience was in an uproar. As Bo departed, freshwoman Robin Kanter gushed, "You see? You can get peppy with- out pep pills!"
