OP) - Au- thorities say they have learned the identities of a man and wo- man claiming to be leaders of a Jesus Christ-Outer Space cult and found they spent time in Texas and Missouri jails during: the past year. However, investigators also say they are still puzzling over the whereabouts of an undeter- mined number of people in Ore- gon, California and Colorado who were told by the couple they ought to forget everything and leave earth on a spaceship to meet their savior. AND authorities still don't know where the couple known as "The Two" are. The couple's identities sur- faced in Harlingen, Texas. Po- lice Capt. John Doster said they were arrested and locked in the Cameron County jail on Aug. 28, 1974, on stolen car and credit' card abuse charges. Dotter identified them as Mar- shall Herff Applewhite, 43, and Bonnie Lee Trousdale Nettles, 48. He said they were arrested after they held a news confer- ence in a Harlingen motel room, rented in the name of a local television newsman who called police because the couple rented the room in his name without his knowledge. POLICE checked out the cou- ple and found they were wanted elsewhere. Applewhite said his new name was Shril Pranvanha and that he was born in Spur, Texas, son of a Presbyterian minister. The woman said her new name was Shaki Devi but told nothing else about herself. "We came to the Rio Grande Valley by spiritual guidance," said Applewhite before he was taken to jail to await extradi- tion to St. Louis to face charges on stealing a rental car. "We're not married, but we're living to- gether. We have renounced sex in preparation for our journey." APPLEWHITE and Nettles re- portedly were vague about the philosophy of their "Human In- dividual Metamorphosis" (HIM) society, but reporters said they sprinkled their talk with refer- ences to the Bible's Book of Revelations and a "better life." Revelations, in the New Tes- tament, predicts the earth's de- struction and the second coming of Christ. The identities of the couple were brought to light yesterday by the Portland Oregonian. It said Applewhite was taken to St. Louis where he pleaded guilty tc car theft and spent four months in the county jail. NETTLES was taken to Hous- ton on credit card charges, but police had no record of her ar- rival, dismissal or prosecution. By ANNEMARIE SCHIAVI The University has a snazzy new computer that keeps better track of the books than ever be- fore and makes it easier to crack down on delinquent bor- rowers. Housed in the Graduate Li- brary basement, the Singer 10 Computer records the identifi- cation numbers of both the stu- dents and faculty members who k'ep books overtime and will alert librarians if they try to check out additional volumes. THE BIG machine also will prevent books from being checked out on lost or stolen identification cards - provided' students report the loss at Win- dow A in the LSA building. "It saves tirne and is more ef- ficient," says Kirk Nims, re- serve desk superintendent. "It gives students a lot less hassle." Another big complaint among students is that they never re- ceive their overdue notices, ac- cording to Nims. In the past, the notices were sent to the last known address for the students - which often is in error. BUT with the computer, the library system can keep much closer tabs on the students and their whereabouts. 11 It is exasperating to be called so persistently when the last thing we want to do is to get up and go but God elects to keep on haunting like some holy ghost.
