He challenged Spain to open fire on the marchers. THE KING'S announcement followed a ruling by the Inter- national Court of Justice at The Hague that it could not recog- nize Moroccan and Mauritanian sovereignty claims to the West' African desert territory. In a non-binding advisory, opinion requested by the United Nations General Assembly, the court said the two countries had links to the territory when Spain colonized it in 1884, but these. were based more on ties to the, nomadic Saharan tribesmen than to the land. Morocco's claims to the phos- phate-rich northern part of the territory are opposed by Spain and Algeria, both of which de- mand a referendum among the Sahara's nomadic population' of 80,000 that could lead to inde- pendence. Mauritania wants the southern and western parts of Sahara. THE DISPUTE has brought combat-ready troops of Algeria, Spain and Morocco to the terri- tory's borders. King Hassan said his march- ers - one tenth of whom would be women - would be unarmed and would not fight back if fired on by Spanish troops. Dr. Renato Dulbecco, 61, an Italian-born American, will share the $143,000.award with Howard Martin Temin, 40, of the University of Wisconsin and Da- vid Baltimore, 37, of the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dulbecco did most of his research in California but moved to London 10 years ago and now works at the Imeprial Cancer Research Fund Labora- tory. THE prize-awarding faculty of Sweden's Caroline medical in- stitution cited the three micro- biologists for discoveries show- cientists ing "the interaction between tu- mor viruses and the genetic ma- terial in the cell." Dulbecco said in London he was surprised that Temin and' B a 1 t i m o r e were co-winners since, while all three were well acquainted, they had done their research independently. Dulbec- co said he felt almost like a father to both of them. "I know them very, very well and see them frequently, but it's only recently that we realized our efforts were converging," he said. "WE THOUGHT we had been doing quite different things." Temin was one of Dulbecco' s students in the 1950's at the Cal- ifornia Institute of Technology while Baltimore was part of a Dulbecco-led team at the Salk Institute at La Jolla, Calif.
