(R) - Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, charged with attempted assassination of President 'Ford and given permission to defend herself at her trial, has been granted one hour each week for interviewing witnesses in the county jail. Calling the arrangement "totally inadequate," Richard Walk- er, a public defender appointed to serve as Fromme's co-counsel, said yesterday that it means Fromme will have only about six hours for interviewing witnesses before jury selection begins Nov. 4. SHERIFF DUANE LOWE met Tuesday with U.S. District Court Judge Thomas MacBride and agreed to the extra hour, each week for Fromme to interview witnesses in addition to the normal one-hour Thursday night visiting privileges allowed jail inmates. Fromme had maintained that the normal visiting hour should be considered time for personal visits with friends and news media interviews. Lowe and MacBride also agreed that Fromme would be pro- vided a table, chair and writing materials for her interviews with witnesses. Fromme, 26, a member of convicted mass murderer Charles Manson's so-called family, was arrested Sept. 5 by a Secret Service agent who said he grabbed a gun she was pointing at the President from two feet away.
