By BRIAN DEMING "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." I Corinthians 10:30 When someone asks Michigan placekicker Bob Wood about his sudden appearance in the lime- light he recalls this Biblical verse. The small black kicker has found himself, after only two varsity games, in the record books with a Michigan single- game record of four field goals, all in the second half of Michi- gan's 19-19 tie Saturday with Stanford. But Wood remains unaffected. In fact, he was not even sure what record he set. "It really' doesn't matter. We didn't win," the junior said. "I'm just doing my job." Wood also dismisses the publicity with a laugh. "Pub- licity is no motivation at all." What has motivated the junior Ohioan, what has kept him out for four years, is accredited by Wood to his faith. "Being a Christian is really a motivating force." Bob speaks quietly but em- phatically about his beliefs. They are a very central part of his life. A member of Campus Cru- sade for Christ, Athletes in Ac- tion and the Fellowship for Christian Athletes, Wood said, in reference to the field goal he -Dr. Paul C. Uslan FAITHINSPIRESKICKER booted to give Michigan the short-lived 19-16 lead last Sat- urday, "I just went out there and concentrated on God. I thought about the verse in the Bible from II Chronicles 20:15 where it says, 'Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but God's'. " I know that if I concentrate and trust in God completely, He wll see me through every situation." This helps explain Bob's ad- miration for boxer Muham- mad Ali. Wood disagrees with Ali on many things, including Ali's faith but, as Woods says, "I really admire his attitude in that he acknowledges a higher power." Wood, a senior scholastically with a junior's eligibility on the football team, has prior to this season been very much in the background behind last year's placekicker Mike Lantry. Last year, in fact, Wood was red-' shirted. "It was hard to begin with," tices opponent plays against the. says Wood , "but really worth starting defensive unit. ,1975 Wood's toe leads Blue attack I it." Wood came to Michigan from London, Ohio, a town about 20 miles from Columbus, where he played tailback and safety as well as kicker for his high school team while playing base- ball and basketball in the off- season. His longest kick in high school was 39 yards. "It was always either Ohio State or Michigan," said Wood of his decision to come to Michigan. No school offered him a scholarshp but he fi- nally chose Michigan mainly because of the influence of his high school coach Jim Bowlus, who knew Michigan's offensive backfield coach Chuck Stobart. Up until this year, Wood has been practically unknown, serv- ing as a backup kcker and, in spite of his relative lack of size (5-8, 170), as wide receiver on the "demo squad" that prac- "It makes practice go quick- er," says Wood of his position as end. "But they haven't let me do a whole lot this year." Wood, along wth center Jim Czirr and place kick holder Jer- ry Zuver come to practice twen- ty minutes before the rest of the team. The execution of a field goal according to Wood takes 1.3 sec- onds and depends largely on the coordination of all three-Czirr, Zuver, and Wood. "A big part of any field goal kicker's success is his center and holder," admits Wood. After practice Wood stays and kicks for an extra 15 minutes on his own. Says Coach Bo Schembechler, "Wood has really been good. Our team loves him and re- spects him. He's the kind of guy that'll work like the dickens." As far as range s con- cerned, Wood says, "I feel com- fortable kicking anythng inside 45 yards out." Inevitably Wood must consid- er the fate of Mike Lantry, a man who holds all sorts of kick- ing records for Michigan but who is remembered ignomini- ously as the man who missed the "big one." "I don't think about it," says Wood, "unless ,someone reminds me. If you think about the bad things that happen, they hap- pen." Maybe the Maize and Blue will never be in that position again for the rest of the season. But if they are - if Michigan has the ball on the Ohio State 20 with ten seconds left, on fourth down, behind by one point - look for number "3" and knock on Wood. ~Blue leads iBig T'en ~early stats The Big Ten has released sta- tistics for members' first two games of the season and the re- sults are interesting to say the least. All the Big Ten teams have played one game in the conference and one non-confer- ence game. The Wolverines of Michigan lead the league in rushing with an average of 358 yards per game. Ohio State is second with 275 yards per game. In total offense Michigan also leads the league with a whop- ping 447 yards per game total. Minnesota is second and Ohio State third. On the defensive side of the ledger, Michigan leads in rush- ing defense giving up only a measly 72 yards per game. Ohio State is second. However against the pass, as one might expect, the Wolverines are dead last, giving up over 160 yards per game. Minnesota is first, giving up only 31 yards per game. The league's leading runner is Gordon Bell of Michigan with 274 yards in two games. Greg Boykin of Northwestern is sec- ond with 251 yards and Archie Griffin of Ohio State is third. 30717 W.
