The triumph reduced to four the Red Sox' pennant-clinching number. Any combination of four Boston victories or Balti- more losses will insure the Red Sox of their first division title' since 1967. Schembechler mellowed in time for his Monday luncheon, discussed at right by Daily sports editor Brian Deming. Some must be Spectators QOME MIGHTY dissatisfied customers filed out of Michigan Stadium last Saturday afternoon at the conclusion of Michi- gan's 19-19 tie with Stanford. Particularly disgruntled were the hard-core student support- ers who had waited in line for days for decent seats to watch the supposedly second best team in the country. Said one during the sorry showing, "If they don't win, I'm going to withhold my tuition." Well they didn't win. But, contrary to the post-game mood, they didn't lose either. "If you had been in our locker room I think you'd find it was a loss." Bo remarked at yesterday's luncheon. But Bo was neither dispairing nor discouraged and refused .to center criticism on any facet of the Wolverine team. Even the defense, which gave up 285 yards in the air, escaped a chewing out. ,That team will get 285 yards every time they throw," said Bo on Stanford. "I'd welcome Baylor to throw 55 times," There were only two points that Bo expressed disappoint- ment with. The first was the slow reaction after passes were released. "They didn't break on the ball as they should have," Schem- bechler said. The second was the failure to pick off interceptions. Michigan had only two among the 44 aerials Cardinal quar- terback Mike Cordova launched. Bo was not critical of the pass rush as he credited a large part of Michigan's defensive breakdown to Cordova's brilliance. "I'd say it's the best game he ever played," Bo said. The excuse is not very satisfactory. The "impregnable" Michigan defense proved itself quite vulnerable. You can rest assured the Wolverine backfield will be tested plenty in the coming weeks. Schembechler plans to make some adjustments for the Bay- lor game to get both Jim Pickens and Dwight Hicks on the field together. Pickens will probably move to strongside halfback while Hicks will take over at safety. Offensively, the lackbister performance demanded comment and may call for some adjustments Saturday. Bo was particularly displeased with the offense on short yardage situations and on plays in enemy territory. e i "In two games we have had a first down inside our op- ponents 40-yards line on 18 occasions and only scored twice." Schembechler pointed out. e EAt quarterback Bo hinted that he might give junior Mark t E1,7inza a shot this weekend. "It might be a little unfair to Mark - not giving him a chance to lay," Schembechler said. g Meanwhile tackle Jim Hall returns to action this week and d Gene Johnson and Dave Harding will get a long look at tight end. d Well, there are two things Michigan fans could not com- d Mlain about after Saturday's game. One is the halftime per- formance where the Michigan band gave their best show in years. The other is the excitement, something Michigan fans us- ually only see about once annually. "You can't say it wasn't exciting." said Bo. "I like those - dull, control, games - booing when you run into the line for - the fifth straight time." Ah, the good ol' days.
