Drug Help (761-HELP) is a community service organization which operates a 24-hour crisis phone line staffed by trained personnel who can also go out on house calls to deal with prob- lems that can't be handled over the telephone. THE GROUP is one of a loose coalition of three community organizations which coiprise the William St. Community Center, located at 621. E. William St. The other two groups are Ozone House and the Community Project. Although Drug Help was established five years ago pri- marily to deal with drug use and abuse problems, its main func- tion today, according to Saviaoo, is counseling. The group con- ducts short and- long term drug counseling for families and individuals. The staff consists of about 60 unpaid volunteers and six paid members and at least two workers are on duty 24 hours per day. All staffers go through 60 hours of training before they are placed on duty, including instruction in first aid, overdose prob- lems, and crisis counseling. AMBULANCE SERVICES are. available but most medical cases are referred to hospitals and the Free People's Clinic. Ozone House is aonther service organizati >n which offers its counseling services mainly to runaways. Like Drug Help, it is staffed primarily by trained volunteers and severail paid workers. "Basically, we're an alternative agency, we're not so lkely to be distributed by runways as would another organization, like the Department of Social Services," says Ozone House worker Dan Bates. "WE TRY TO BE on the side of the youth, by counseling on a human level," he explains. Family counseling sessions may attempt to reunite familiesE when this seems to be the solution. If, however, the problems -an't be resolved, Ozone House can arrange for temporary or permanent foster house placement. According to Bates, most of the runaways who come to the Ozone House office (which is open from 10 am. to 1 a.m.) are between the ages of 14 and 17 and are from the Washtenaw County area. THE COMMUNITY Center Project, newest of the three organ- izations at the William St. Center, includes several educational and informational programs such as the Ride Switchboard and the Community Switchboard. Both groups can be reached anytime between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. by dialing ONE-1111. Community Switchboard provides information on .community organizations and happenings. The switchboard collects and up- dates information on cultural events, community services and food and vegetable co-ops. The Ride Switchboard maintains a list of those persons wishing to obtain rides out-of-town and as well as those offering rides.
