He had 870 yards and eight touchdowns last season. -Onoforio says of Galbreath, "He's a power runner who can break the long one, plus he can throw and catch." Junior Jornel Williams as tailback for the Tigers garnered 100 yards in 30 carries last year. Hopes also lie in trans- fer Curtis Brown. WHILE Buck and Sadich have graduated, the offensive line has plenty of reserves. The cen- ter is Mike Owens, a 4-3, 240- pounder. The Tigers also boast excellent pass blocking tackles in junior Morris Towns (6-4, 255) and senior D. W. Johnston (6-4, 240). While the offense poses no problems for Onoforio, the de- fense of Missouri tells another story. Two regulars on the de- fensive line and both lineback- ers have graduated. Only the secondary has proven ability. The top returnees= on the de- fensive line include flanker Bob McRoberts who amassed 7 solo tackles and 43 assists last sea- son, nose guard Steve Meyer, and tackle Tom Cooper. TRANSFER Curtis Kirkland will fill the tackle position and juniors Blaine Hennengsen and Dale Smith will vie for open position. John Austin, Mark Kirkpat- rick and Tom Helm will com- pete for the linebacking slots. Despite the graduation of Steve Yount and Tony Giller, the secondary remains tough. Junior cornerback Rob Fitzger- ald picked off three passes last year, while his counterpart, Kenny Downing had 49 solo tac- kles. LEAVING TOWN? GAME AWAY? HEAR IT ON -. - SONY AM/FM Portable RADIO PANASONIC s AM/FM, AC/DC RADIO RCA TABLE RADIO By BRIAN DEMING Overlooked amidst the hoop- la of the Michigan - Ohio State game last year was the fact that, for the sake of an extra point, Michigan State would have tied for the Big Ten Championship. "Big two, little eight" may soon' be a forgotten phrase if it was not abandoned after MSU's classic 16-3 tripping of Ohio State in 1974. Only a 21-21 tie with Illinois kept the Spartans from a share of the Big Ten title. AND THIS year Michigan State has most of the material back. From a 7-3-1 team the Spartans lost only seven start- ers. "We feel we're going to be in the championship chase," Stolz remarked prior to the season opener with the Buckeyes, "We base this judgement on the number of experienced players we have returning, the number of regulars back and the out- standing personnel we'll have available in skilled areas. It's the first time since I've been head coach that we could say this." RED CEDAR rooters are also happy to note a generous Big Ten schedule that gives the line or up behind the line - depending on the situation - junior Kim Rowekamp (6-3, 240) returns. The Kalamazoo native has size, power and speed to go to the ball to make or set up tackles. The potential weak links are at left tackle and right end. Rich Washington (6-3, 205) fig- ures to start at right end pro- vided he avoids reinjuring his neck which was severely dam- aged last year. Sophomore Lar- ry Bethea (6-5, 219) should move into the tackle position. He played tight end as a freshman. WHILE Pat McClowry will have no problem handling one of the linebacking positions Stolz will have a problem re- placing Pat's brother Terry. Sophomore Paul Rudzinski (6-1, 220) should get the nod as he played well in every game last season backing up the Mc- Clowrys. T h e defensive backfield should be immensely improved if only by experience. Stolz started two sophomores and two freshmen in the backfield last year in a defenle that fin- ished fifth against Big Ten pass- ing. Junior John Breslin (5-11, 183) and sophomore Mike Im- hoff (5-11, 180) will man the cor- ners while junior Tom Hannon (6-1, 202) and sophomore Tom Graves (6-4, 211) will keep the safety positions. Graves is re- garded as a superstar in the making. Receivers coach Jim- my Raye calls him "the best athlete I've ever had the pri- vilege of recruiting." Of the other half of the team Stolz says, "We've really strengthened our offense. Pri- marily because those men, many of them, will be playing Big for the third year. Practically everyone will have had two year's experience, HEADING the list of offen- sive returnees will be quarter- back Charlie Baggett (6-0, 182) who was second in the Big Ten in scoring last season with 60 points. He has proven he can throw, run and direct an offense with mastery. Richie Baes (5-9), 183) and Levi Jackson (5-11, 201) return to make a very potent tailback- fullback combination. Baes' pre-season backup was expect- ed to be sophomore Claude Gei- ger. However Geiger was bad- ly injured in an auto accident in West Virginia this summer and will not play this season. Ted Bell (6-0, 184), highly tout- ed sophomore who did not play at all last year due to a kneef injury, figures to be backup at tailback. However the Spartans have the disadvantage of playing five of the toughest teams in the nation the first five weeks of the season. After hosting Ohio State, MSU plays Miami of Ohio, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, and Michigan. All but Michigan played in a bowl game last season. BUT this year Michigan State has the material to battle the best. On defense they should be as strong as even and an of- fense the Spartans may finally have the combination of experi- ence and strength to put plenty of points on the board.
